It was always clear that David Goodhart's fairy tale of a struggle between rootless cosmopolitans and down-to-earth conservatives ("Anywheres vs Somewheres") was not influential because it was accurate, but because it confirmed the prejudices of right-leaning commentators. Now we have the evidence:

The Road to Nowhere: Being Rooted in a Region Does Little to Predict Support for Populist Parties or Opposition to Migration and Social Change
In his influential book The road to somewhere David Goodhart claims that a split between a majority of people who are rooted in particular places or groups (the “Somewheres”) and a minority of people...

Paul Nash's "We are Making a New World" starkly depicts the desolate landscape of the Western Front after World War I, with skeletal trees and a haunting, barren landscape under a blood-red sunrise. This painting, emblematic of Nash's experience as an official war artist, powerfully conveys the devastating impact of the conflict and the ironic contrast in the title suggesting a grim vision of progress.

I was looking at the website of a dedicated romance bookstore in Devon and saw they had a section called "Books written with AI that are actually worth reading", and when I tell you I was inhaling deeply as I clicked. Should have known better. Props to Moonlit Chapters in Barnstaple, good work.
post reading: Look, if your using Gen AI to generate content in any form, then you need to rethink whether this community is for you.

I've seen an influx of authors, readers and bookish businesses using Gen AI in some form on their socials (and websites) and somehow i am flabbergasted every time.

We should all know by now that Gen AI steals from creatives. So using it while claiming to love authors is a choice. Using it as a bookish business when you are making money off of your love of books, is a choice.

And its the wrong bloody choice. And you should see yourself out.

Inheritance Tax is one of the fairest and most egalitarian forms of taxation imaginable. It is only paid by the top 5% most asset rich estates. It is a direct attack on unjustified wealth and privilege. Its abolition would further entrench social hierarchy and stifle genuine equality of opportunity.

Trump told 9/11 families that he was rescued from the rubble of the World Trade Center -- an obvious and shocking lie. Here's how the New York Times reports it. This is like reporting George Wallace's "segregation forever" speech as "Governor speaks at inauguration. Some remarks controversial."

President Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to a volunter firefighter who saved numerous people. He also added to a disputed account of his actions that day.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
