It’s one thing to acknowledge there will be a market for readers who are apparently happy to read Ai-generated books; it’s another to shit all over romance authors *and* garment factory workers. ‘Machine-made clothes’ are *still* made by humans — a poor analogy from a critically acclaimed author.

There is a connection...between achievement in public life and progress in the arts. The age of Pericles was also the age of Phidias. The age of Lorenzo de Medici was also the age of Leonardo da Vinci. The age of Elizabeth also the age of Shakespeare...(John F. Kennedy. Also Toby Zeigler.)

One of my friends just conjured a new verb for me: Jordaning (verb) “Attempting an otherwise trivial task, yet catastrophically failing in the most unique and unintentionally hilarious manner possible.” I don’t know what to think about this.

“Gogineni was aware of authors’ complaints that the ‘datasets are stolen’ and that authors were losing work to AI-generated competition. Nevertheless as the brief goes on, he did not find those complaints ‘all that sympathetic’ and instead viewed them as ‘acceptable economic disruption.’” It isn’t.

Blasted through @adamsimcox.bsky.social TIME JUMP — a fun twist to the time travel genre. A time machine in more ways than one, as his descriptions of London in 1997 closely matched my own memories of the era. I could definitely see this as a limited series in streaming — make it happen!

Everyone thinks the apocalypse is Terminator 2: Judgement Day. It isn’t. It’s what’s left of humanity in Wall-E, where all friction — physical and mental — is completely removed, and we can’t do a single thing without depending on our AI Overlords. And it starts with the death of culture.

Me reading Patrick Radden Keefe’s new book London Falling, not realising it was non-fiction until I finished. It goes off like this hundreds of times and it’s infuriating; but you can’t stop reading because the story is so compelling. Kept thinking it read like a New Yorker article on steroids.

A question posed by @franceswrites.bsky.social during a long industry discussion. Can you think of a SFF book in the past 5 years which was a breakout success, WITHOUT being a) in a crate; b) from an established author; c) an indie success ported to trad? Cause we were struggling.

I have *so much* respect for anyone who works in retail. When I did it, thankfully it was a company with a niche customer base — most of the shops I visit are often occupied by the most entitled arseholes ever who treat the staff terribly. Newsflash: be polite and it’s likely the staff will help.

Every empire which has diminished in influence has but one thing left: soft power in the form of culture. Successive governments over the last 20 years have tried very hard to get rid of humanities, despite culture and IP being a boon to our economy. “The cost of everything the value of nothing.”

‘Maybe you’re not that great of a writer’. You can learn to write just like the rest of us because we all sucked when we first started out. I hate this inane shortcutting boosters use to justify this stuff — they don’t want to be writers, they want to revel in the glow of having written something.
