Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

With reward hacking, what’s not going on is the rat learns to chew through the cardboard to get to the cheese. It’s much stranger. What happens is you create a new kind of rat that prefers the taste of cardboard to the taste of cheese.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

If the value of protecting endangered species isn't obvious to you, imagine instead that it is protecting the last ruin of an ancient civilization from being bulldozed for something not particularly important. Imagine the ruin is 30 million years old.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: Genghis khan is sitting in a throne room. His advisor enters with a fruity drink in hand. The advisor proclaims, “Genghis Khan! I bring a gift from a faraway land!” Panel 2: he continues, “a ‘strawberry margarita.’” Genghis takes a delicate yet generous sip. Panel 3: Genghis and his advisor exchange smiles. Genghis says, “yeeooo that’s fire”

a lot of people need to internalize that you need to be high agency — now more than ever act, even when it feels awkward push yourself, even when it feels out of your league take chances, even when you know they might not pay off I know it's not easy, but a lot of people fall into self-defeatism

Here are some results from @typesafeai.bsky.social’s Jev on a common task we have, comparing results with Jev to top frontier models. with zero shots we can achieve nearly frontier levels of accuracy, but if we do a bit extra work we can beat frontier accuracy

A big category error I see with AI discourse on bsky is seeing it as a *product*, not a technology. This leads to a lot of "not even wrong" ideas like thinking you can handle AI safety by punishing corporations for the hacking their software does.
