really sucks how much social media (even just text based ones) has fragmented....bluesky has lib chopped uncs...substack notes has annoying writers...threads and twitter have all the really mentally ill people. That used to be all in one place!

Only disagree with this because Gibney is one of the worst filmmakers imaginable and responsible for some of the worst tendencies of modern documentary. Go see John Wilson's "History of Concrete" instead.

You're all contractually obligated to read this comment Rob Paulsen made on a Tim Curry interview in 2025
Rob Paulsen - Voice Actor

I had the remarkable privilege to work with Tim a few dozen times.
Kind, generous, playful, naughty and a TOTAL pro. A couple years ago, at NY Comic Con, I was in the green room having lunch and Tim
came in in his chair. Of course, I was aware of his stroke, so l walked over knelt down and said, "Tim! It's Rob Paulsen. We
worked together on..." he looked me and said, "I know who you are,
you fucking wanker." It was like a blessing from the Pope. Utterly
unique. Unstoppable. A total star.

What didn't you like about Ecstasy?

SB: It opened up this music to a lot of people who weren't really interested in it before. Neither in electro nor in house. Suddenly they were all coming to the clubs. And I saw them there and realized they were only there for the drugs. That sucked. So for a lot of people, drugs were definitely a gateway into this music. For us, it was more the other way around. Besides, I had the impression that ecstasy makes you like just about anything.

RB: That's exactly what I was going to say!

SB: If only Grace Jones had been playing in the clubs back then, suddenly everyone would have been listening to Grace Jones. It wasn't about what was actually playing. The mechanism was more like: Here you have ecstasy, here you have some kind of music, what do you think of it? And people naturally said "Totally awesome!" because they were high.

RB: With the wrong drugs, we wouldn't have been able to create a real voice, a real signature. Because we would have liked anything. That was very important to us, even though we weren't militant hardliners, as is sometimes portrayed. Anything that would have led to us no longer being ourselves, but someone else, was strictly forbidden.Did the boredom you just mentioned lead you to use drugs? Or did you take them precisely because you wanted to make music?

SB: I was making music before I started doing drugs. Even quite a while before that. I only really started when I was 17 or 18. By then I'd already been making music for three or four years. I didn't like ecstasy, though, which everyone was taking in the club back then. We took acid and speed because that was the best combination for us to go out. People told us it was pretty intense and weird. I always had a strong feeling they were completely wrong.

RB: We were nice and very sensitive guys, we couldn't accept that.

Ezra Klein: And look, you and I are not going to agree on a million things. My point is not to convert you to my politics. I’m not going to do that.

Chris Rufo: You should try. I mean, why not? I’m trying to convert you.

I don't know man, I just take the screenshots
Google Translate, showing one of the quotes attributed to Deng on Chinese Wikiquote. The original text is:

只要你有一颗少女心,看什么都是少女漫。
——Yu Deng 《百合漫属于少女漫吗?》(2014年9月12日)

Google Translate says that this translates in English to the following:

"If you have a girlish heart, everything you see will be a shoujo manga."
—Yu Deng, "Does yuri manga belong to shoujo manga?" (September 12, 2014).

To me cutting USAID is like, you put a quarter into a slot every day to keep millions of people alive. You don’t have to do it but it causes you no hardship. Then one day the job falls to people who are overtly white supremacist and they decide to stop doing it. It is most obviously murder

yu deng, the winner of the 2026 Fields Medal, the "nobel prize for mathematics", cites yuri manga in particular as helping ground and comfort him during his work
For comfort, Deng turned to manga. “I remember him at Courant. He was always holding a manga,” said Jalal Shatah (opens a new tab), a professor there who formerly chaired the math department. Deng particularly liked stories about deep friendship and romance and found himself drawn to a genre known as yuri, which focuses on those kinds of relationships between women — stories that “feel nice and warm and beautiful,” as he put it. They helped him be kinder to himself, “more comfortable with life.”
