Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Yes, I’m aware. I’m thinking years down the line. Like, a family is touring southend high schools and only 1 out of 3 have metal detectors. What does that family make of that? Do they perceive the one with a detector as less safe? How does it affect their decision? A wondering! 100
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Question about this… will the perception of the schools with detection now be “schools that are unsafe” because they have weapons detection, which could affect enrollment? I have a wondering about that. 300
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Oh gosh, don’t get me started about how there are lights at tennis courts and skateparks and some ballfields but not at playgrounds (I also take my kids outside in the winter 😆). I also recognize lighting is not free! 040
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The elementary school is asphalt. I don’t know if there had been a dog problem before at Rainier Beach track; field is also turf so less of an issue than grass. I also can’t think of another southend high school track that’s locked on weekends. Such a bummer! 030
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I can’t tell if I’m behind the times or if all of these “tricks” for basic arithmetic are detrimental. Like my kid was just working on 15 - 8 but the section was “find a 10 and then find the difference” … so it would be 15 - 5 =10 and then (8-5=3) so then 10-3 =7 so then 15 - 8 =7. I’m so annoyed. 230
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026At the time when they told me this, I had one kid at the school & another future student. The school’s enrollment was (is) poor and they struggled with having families feel welcomed. We hoped caregivers could stay after school at the playground to meet each other. Admin wouldn’t agree. Dumb! 060
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Rainier Beach high school has a beautiful new track. It’s a track that community used a lot before it was redone. Now it’s locked and never available to the community. An admin at another school said locking playground was important to ensure it was preserved for their students 🙄 290
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I see this type of “math discovery” in math curriculum and it feels like not enough is spent on ensuring basic building blocks. “Whether it’s a tie knot or algebra, you need to learn how to do it first, then practice it until you’re fluent, and then you can explore.” 2112
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I just don’t understand the issue, and why paid parking doesn’t already exist in both places. Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I wish these folks spent energy addressing real needs in the southend. Like we need crossing guards down in Rainier Beach, really badly!! Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I like it in theory… until you have a bad-fit and/or poor performing principal and/or one who doesn’t represent the school community — or only represents the small, vocal minority. I’m sure the majority of principals are great! But some students and families are just then unlucky and that stinks. 110

Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 20/09/2026And I get why folks leave some schools or leave SPS all together. Moving super slow through curriculum and not finishing it all, no accelerated learning unless you test 99.9%, only remedial homework, and asking for the bare minimum (‘just read any book!’) — these things aren’t good for any kids. 141
Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 20/09/2026It’s definitely not to the same extent, but the ‘soft bigotry of low expectations’ is something I’ve witnessed by adults in some of our southend schools, and I really don’t see enough will or effort by SPS to acknowledge and change this. Alex Wakeman Rouse @awakerouse.bsky.social · 19/09/2026That’s really helpful context.
