People think I'm joking when I say that disinformation threatens democracy and sovereignty, and that this means that kinetic options should be on the table, even if ideally not used.

I'd be inclined to disagree with Gyges/ agree with Tao and say that we **must** develop understanding of the specific mechanism of a drug, if only to deal with patient heterogeneity The one issue is that the budget of biomed research is way insufficient for that, and it is not going up right now.

My support for bluesky/atproto is pretty much explicitly a "political" project. It is bad for a small number of (mostly right-wing) people to literally own all the sources of media. Open-source algorithms + the ability to move your account without negative network effects opposes this.

No integrated mathematical framework is proposed in this preprint. But I hope to show that formalizing the relational, diachronic aspect of mind and life is at the same time: a) a hard problem; b) a well-framed one; c) can be done through the core logic of the rFEP (and not much else).

If natural structure changes in time through its own activity, or if the specific aspects of physical structure that are relevant to a given organization are brought about by this very organization, then entailment from dynamical structure is not all the story.
100
Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
None of this invalidates Friston's cFEP. Its formalism captures by construction the evolution of well-defined objects in well-defined spaces along a well-defined law of motion - nothing more, nothing less. My argument here concerns what processes (arguably) fall outside of such a representation.
100
Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
In section 5, I show the cFEP/rFEP complementarity is coherent with Mossio, Moreno, and Montévil's closure of constraints account of biological/cognitive organization The cFEP is a well-framed account of action within a system of constraints, and the rFEP is a well-framed account of its evolution.
100
Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
In section 4, I argue that the cFEP/rFEP complementarity is a well-framed framework to study life and mind - both in their synchronic and diachronic aspects. Specifically, I argue that a structural representation of change in structure is necessary, and the rFEP is as close as we get.

Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
This principle translates the central nature of a "relational" system, where specific states of the world are brought about as significant in virtue of the broader organization Hence, I suggest it constitutes a "relational" FEP, which complements the "classical" FEP in studying change in structure.

Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
In section 3, I introduce Fields, Friston et al.'s "FEP for generic quantum systems". Assuming only breakdown in commutativity, it derives the emergence of a "Markov blanket" of observables as a participatory holographic screen, produced by the agent's activity but not entailed by its dynamics
100
Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
In section 2, I attempt to ground this insight in the basic thermodynamics of observation. Observation has a thermodynamic cost, and following Fields' work, discriminating what is observed from what is not entails the breaking of commutativity between observations.

Notably, their statespace itself cannot be measured; and to the extent it can, it is not conserved under composition. In Life Itself, Rosen builds a theory of life on this basis - most notably, showing that that a self-produced system does not accept a single "master" dynamical model.
100
Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
In section 1, I explore how Rosen's work in measurement theory and relational biology give us the outline of a bridge. Once we consider the general theory of dynamical systems, without assuming access observables in a dynamical system, very exotic properties emerge.

Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
By contrast, the Free Energy Principle describes the emergence of mental states from the information geometry of the dynamics of the system. This provides a description of intentionality from basic physics, but fails to translate enactive intuition: by design, the explanandum becomes the explanans.

Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
This conception of mind is grounded in Varela's view of life as articulated in Principles of Biological Autonomy: defined by an organization constituted by relations btw processes, which supervenes on (but is not entailed by) the mere physical structure underlying those processes.
100
Fluffy Cyborg, IInd of the name @avel.kairos-research.org · 11/10/2026
Enactive approaches describe cognition as "laying down a path in walking", (re)constructing its own structure as it engages with the world. In The Embodied Mind, Varela et al. describe mental content as something actively produced at the interface between mind and world; and entailed by neither.

the amount of information you can exchange with another human being in a face to face setting in an hour can easily take 12 hours on a twitterlike, if not multiple days. so you keep the conversation going as long as possible. you'll really get into those deep insights with just another reply!

probably you start a few more conversations, to multiplex your Bluesky conversations at the same time you weave them all in among every other thing you're doing in your life. it's the only way to extract what you want, what i want, from this place: rich, deep conversation.

i have some ideas for a new variation of a "slow Bluesky" client that would restructure the experience toward being more like correspondence and less like the fuzzy stochastic never-ending conversation that it feels like to me in its vanilla configuration. maybe i'll vibe something up.

i don't like how any conflict on social media stretches out across hours and days. an argument that could be fought and put to bed and recovered from in a couple of hours IRL can last a week in the low-density, stochastic latency environment of Online, and i'm activated and stressed the entire time.

the reason twitterlikes have this two-attractors structure is that they're low-throughput, high-latency, stochastic, unpredictable communication channels. i get on here because i want to have conversations. intellectual stimulation, learning, clever debating. i don't get that IRL, and i crave it.

In the Baby's First Years study, low-income moms got US$333/mo (18% more income) for their child's first 6 years. Their kids showed slower biological aging. Because the costs of accelerated aging build over a lifetime, even small early gains could mean big public health returns.

This week's post is more complaining about the Kafkaesque nightmare of an academic system in Austria and Germany. Have you ever heard of the title Privatdozent? No? Be glad. Because it's a title, not a job, but holding onto it requires you to teach — even if you are not paid for it.

In Germany and Austria there's a degree higher than a PhD traditionally required for professorships, and it's kind of a terrible deal.
