Had a close call visiting a local establishment's website yesterday. A CloudFlare dialogue came up, and after clicking to confirm that 'I was not a robot', it prompted me to: * Press Windows+R (opening a run command window * Paste something from my keyboard and press enter Don't ever do this.
A scam CloudFlare box stating "Additional Verification Required", and then providing instructions that install malware on your computer.

When I wrote "we often rely on extraction efforts happening in other countries which may or may not be friendly" in my renewable energy video, Canada was not on my mind. But please, Canada - get nasty and fuck us up. You have every right to not be friendly, and we're counting on it.

An aged-looking photo of five middle aged guys in 1978 with the haircuts you might expect in front of a blank gray background. Three of them are wearing collared shirts colored mottled shades of pink. On the left end the most serious looking guy is wearing a white polo shirt and the guy on the other end, the only one with a mustache, has a mottled blue shirt. Embroidery abouve the shirt pockets tell us we are looking at (L to R) Rich, Al, Howard, George, and and Alvie(?). They are all posed with bowling balls which are resting on top of a surface that is behind a big white placard that goes to the floor and obscures the rest of the bowlers. Across the top of the sign in a serif font it says 'Maybe It Will'. in the bottom left there is a cartoon face of a man with a high collar, a bowler hat and red hair and muttonchops. On his hat is a crossed-fingers icon over the word 'Happen' in a stencil font. In the center, cruising over cartoon waves is a steaming rear-wheel riverboat, and to the left of that a rendering of the St. Louis arch and the skyline with in, and in the space above the buildings in a deco-ish sans-serif the word 'Today'.

on two occasions I have run into a dude who went with the "I identify as a woman" thing because he thinks its really funny and my learning has been that if you take his word for it and start calling him a woman he stops finding it funny in about 1 second and starts getting upset & so you don't stop

Back in the day the premise was "Rent to Own." A possibility built upon a scam. Now, we pay a monthly fee to watch TV and movies and listen to music, yet never the possibility to own. Not sure which scam is worse. Yet, both have an impact on the poor.

NYT wanted to write a story about "moderate Dems go to war with DSA," looked around, and the best they could find was a *proposal* by Third Way to spend $15M against left candidates. The story is not evidence that *Democrats* and the left hate each other... it's evidence that the NYT hates both.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Sure, AI can write a book in the blink of an eye but can it stare out of the window for half an hour with tears in its eyes then return to the keyboard and bang the desk in frustration and scream “SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT”?

Good morning, Bluesky. “I hide the fear and I dig.” —Danny, the Tunnel King, The Great Escape— I want this in needlepoint over my desk. It’s as good a description of the writing life as any I know. Danny’s dug 17 tunnels. I’m revising my 27th novel. I hide the fear and I dig.

This birthright ruling is why I just refuse to tolerate all the Democrat garment rending over NY voters choosing progressive candidates. They are incapable of governing in this moment. The politics of appeasement and centrism gets us to a 5-4 decision on the constitutional question.

Seems the real problem centrist democrats are facing right now is the people are being very clear that they want leaders who will solve their biggest problems, and centrist democrats really don't want to solve their biggest problems and hate the people for wanting that. It's a real pickle for them.

Hey, Dems, let's do this: Instead of centrists freaking out about the success of progressives, maybe we could take Mamdani as a model and focus on listening to and delivering for the voters. What if we had big competition among candidates to see who could do most for voters? Just imagine.

This makes me sad. It’s hubris, not strategy. The desire to play in the space where they perceive the heavy hitters are rather than building a party base in mayorships, state legislatures & governorships that would actually make them heavy hitters. Everybody wants to be famous, but fame is not power.

i will give the press corpse this — going to the trouble of printing a couple of lines of the first amendment out on a sheet of fabric to express your fears about encroachment, then folding it up and putting it away in your suit pocket *does* send a message. it’s just not the message they think.

This bill is an important first step towards cracking down on predatory pricing schemes, but fully regulating dynamic and surveillance pricing means going further. Maryland and every other state still have work to do to regulate promotional offers, loyalty programs, and temporary discounts. /1
