A good summation of David Brooks and "civility" politics generally: no one on the right-wing can ever be described honestly, while everyone who isn't on the right-wing is always portrayed as a radical breaking cherished norms.

I'm saying that it's obvious universal that if you give someone something stupid to do with no reward for doing it well and then make it harder, they won't try as hard. The study has nothing to do with AI except for the fact that you can shoehorn an AI task into this broader principle.
We recruited 354 US-based participants from the online research platform Prolific and paid them $2.60 for
participation (our study took approximately 13 minutes to complete). In the experiment, participants
were given a series of 15 fraction problems to solve of varying difficulty. Participants were explicitly
informed that there was no penalty for providing wrong answers, their payment didn’t depend on how
many questions they solve correctly, and they were requested to do the task to the best of their abilities

Is America in a demographic crisis? Demographers don’t think so. I conducted a survey of U.S. demographers, and this is what I found: 3%: “The low birth rate is a demographic crisis” 25%: "serious concern” 53%: "should be monitored, but no intervention necessary” 20% :“not a problem at all.”

On the history of protests against sexual violence at Cornell. What an amazing quote for a protest here! www.cornellsun.com/article/2026...
“Shame!” was a prominent chant on Monday at the largest demonstration Cornell University has seen since I first arrived here as a graduate student in 1973. I have been affiliated with Cornell ever since, as a postdoctoral fellow, faculty and now graduate professor and professor emerita. Through all these years, I have taught, researched, written and been active in gender and social justice. And I have wanted to see the institution I gave my professional life to live up to the promise that brought me to it in the first place: To be the original co-educational and non-denominational school in the Ivy League that was founded to offer a place where “any person can find instruction in any study,” and home to one of the very first programs in what was then called “women’s studies.”

“Shame” was the message we wanted to convey to the then-president of Cornell in the midst of mid-1970s campus frustration at what came to be called “sexual harassment.” We presented him with a copy of this ancient admonition from Homer’s Odyssey in the original Greek: “Men of Ithaca, it is all your own fault that things have turned out as they have; you would not listen to me, nor yet to Mentor, when we bade you check the folly of your sons who were doing much wrong in the wantonness of their hearts.”

A real successful 1A day here on campus. Heavy hitters. Big student turnout. Engaged questions. My notes for the academic freedom panel is a sort of Cliff Notes of how I approach this thing. This is it. My whole talk.
Notes app reads: Neoliberalism weaponizes bias to justify austerity. Austerity creates corporate universities. Corporate universities are unhealthy organizations. Unhealthy organizations cannot inculcate or defend academic freedom. Without academic freedom to check administrative power, corporate universities will translate austerity into financialized predation. Predation undermines public trust in higher education. Death spiral accelerates.

The 7th Oct was the biggest single-day massacre in the modern history of Palestine/Israel. It was followed by the most lethal campaign in the history of the country. In the last three years, Israel inflicted a 7 Oct on Gaza every three weeks on average (in absolute terms; more in relative terms).
