Philadelphia's first-ever Parallel Parking Championship is coming this Saturday, with challenges including the "one shot" park and parking with 18" of clearance. One judge does ASMR videos in a Philly accent. (See next.) No backup cams allowed. I still think they should have a minivan division. 1/

Does anyone else feel like people should be at least as accountable for the actions of AIs that they own/manage as an average person is for the behavior of their dogs? A dog can also go off and do a bunch of bad stuff you never authorized, but you don't get to throw up your hands and walk away.

My cat would discuss how hard she has to work to maintain my schedule, including forceful reminders of when it is time to go to bed (9:30) and when it is time to get up (6 AM). She would also request more techniques to convince people to turn on the bathroom faucet and stand by to watch her drink.

This is a terrible moment, but I hope it pushes us to think about how we gently reach people who might still be persuaded to get vaccinated. Not the provocateurs or profiteers who cannot or will not be reached, but those who can. Rather than mock or deride them, we need to meet them where they are.

A major failing of this country is the vilification of property taxes by opportunistic pols & affluent homeowners. Yes, property taxes often exhibit major racial & class inequities (Kahrl's The Black Tax). But it is our only real form of wealth tax & folks who can afford to pay it, should. 🧵1/2

In the debate over AI consciousness, I keep coming back to this. We aren't even all that great in extending recognition and full dignity to all humans. It will continue to be very hard to develop recognition of other consciousnesses that cut precise lines where people want them to be cut.

Now that the summer peak is behind us, we can confidently conclude that 2024 will retain its title for warmest day on record, with 2023 coming in 2nd and 2026 coming in a close 3rd. August was nonetheless the warmest month on record, as a growing El Nino event adds to steady ongoing warming.

New post digging into Philadelphia's residential leases. The bottom line, confirming earlier research, is that unenforceable & aversive terms are common, and there's no evidence that tenants get a price break for accepting bad law. The terms survive because they aren't tested.
