Will Toronto’s ‘baby steps’ with Church Street lead to a giant leap for car-free streets in the city?
A move to have city staff look for candidate streets for next summer has supporters of car-free streets hopeful.

The Do West festival last night was a crazy amp-up to a big summer Saturday night. SO MANY (young) people out last night on the west side, peak patio, car traffic barely moving (why do we let cars park on streetcar routes again?) Also, think I found the best spot to watch a show in the city.

Love it when multiple councillors say they don't actually like allowing housing in the middle of a housing crisis and the only reason they do is because the province is stopping them from blocking it. Provincial preemption of local discretionary control works.

This is not a triumph of the city machinery. It is a triumph of a small new guard and Waterfront Toronto overruling the strong objections of certain Toronto staff members and councillors to deliver something radical and much improved on every level.

Ookwemin Minising will be a good place. And a near-total refutation of City Of Toronto’s planning and urban design thinking over the last 25 years. Big congratulations to Jason Thorne and the city staff who moved along this new plan, but without Waterfront Toronto, it would not have happened.

In other muni election news, Chiara Padovani, who came a VERY close second to Councillor Frances Nunziata in 2022 — she lost by 94 votes — , says she’ll be “among the first in line” to register to run in York-South Weston tomorrow morning.
Chiara Padovani will register as a candidate for Ward 5 - York South-Weston
City Councillor Toronto ON — After coming within 94 votes of unseating the longest-serving incumbent councillor in Toronto's history in 2022, social worker Chiara Padovani will register as a candidate for York South-Weston City Councillor in the highly anticipated
re-match in the 2026 Toronto municipal election. The razor-thin margin from 2022 election was further called into question in 2024 after the City's Integrity Commissioner found that the incumbent's campaign broke the
rules during the election. "I'm looking forward to the re-match," says Padovani who will be among the first in
line to register her candidacy at Toronto City Hall on Friday morning.

There will always be a reason for transportation services to say NO to pedestrianization. It is time council takes the first step to reform this outdated viewpoint and say YES to reforming how Toronto pedestrianizes streets. The community, BIA and local councillor support this effort. That’s rare.
