Oddly enough, Kandavel doesn't comment on the "incredible protectionism and NIMBYism" of certain neighbourhoods in his own ward, which he aids and abets.

You’d think this point about the downside of concentrating density in just a few high-rise areas would lead to Kandavel supporting things like sixplexes but, well, he contains multitudes, I suppose. thelocal.to/scarborough-...
When it comes to increasing density, he said Scarborough residents are frustrated that this densification isn’t being spread out more evenly across the city. Rather, he said, there are “canyons of condos” being approved in the Golden Mile, near the Eglinton LRT line in Scarborough, but around the subway stations in areas of Old Toronto, like in Beaches-East York or Toronto-Danforth, “there’s been incredible protectionism and NIMBYism.” Kandavel said the disparity in where high-density housing is approved results in “well-protected” neighbourhoods where the upper-middle class live, and a concentration of “shoebox condos to house service workers.” In his view, the idea is to keep the latter in Scarborough, and have them travel downtown to serve those who are more privileged.
Kandavel said the result would lead to a vision of Toronto that he didn’t want to see, one of segregated neighbourhoods.

Making housing possible is dependent on the three-legged stool that is all three levels of government in Canada, and these days we're lucky if we can even manage just two of those legs.

Thr parents' association at my kids' school included a NIMBY flyer about a proposed seniors residence across the street from the school. They are asking to raise $20,000 to hire lawyers to fight it at the OLT! Say the line, Bart:
"We are concerned about traffic congestion as well as the safety of our children and seniors.

We understand the need for affordable housing, but a 54-unit building is too big for the lot where a single family home once stood.

There is no resident parking or pick-up/drop-off area.

Garbage bins for 54 units will be on the boulevard.

If this building is approved, it will set a precedent for similar sized buildings to be developed in our community."

'He added infills are now seen as a little more “socially acceptable” than they were several years ago.' 'Uptake on small-scale infills may partially depend on how favourable local residents and councillors are towards multiplexes' It's sad when homes are treated like a poor lifestyle-choice.

Conservative MP and Housing Critic @scottaitchison.bsky.social has consistently been a thoughtful voice and leader on housing and greater density in Canadian cities. It is to our benefit when there are pro-housing voices in all parties and we would like to thank Scott for his public service.
Text of Letter of Resignation of Canadian MP Scott Aitchison:

September 30, 2026
Dear residents of Parry Sound—Muskoka,

I have made the difficult decision to resign my seat following the conclusion of the fall parliamentary session. After 30 years of public life, it is time for a new chapter where I will explore new opportunities.

From being elected to Huntsville Town Council and Muskoka District Council at the age of 21, to serving as Mayor of Huntsville and, for the past seven years, as your Member of Parliament, it has been the honour of my lifetime to serve you and represent our community.

Whether it was in the council chambers, or the halls of Ottawa, I worked to build consensus, cut through the bureaucracy, and make life better for the people who placed their trust in me. I carried myself with the same values of the town that raised me: respect, decency, and looking out for your neighbour.

My time as Shadow Housing Minister has allowed me to contribute to a fundamental shift in the national debate on housing. All levels of government have recognized the burden over regulation and excessive taxes and fees place on housing affordability. Our Conservative team can be proud of the work we have done on this file and I know the team will continue this work after my departure.

To the people of Parry Sound—Muskoka who placed their trust in me, and those who I disagreed with but promised passionate representation to, I hope I have made you proud.

I want to thank my incredible staff who have served me and the people of Parry Sound—Muskoka with distinction. None of this would have been possible without you.

To my caucus colleagues and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, it has been a privilege to serve alongside you. I have been fortunate to meet Canadians from coast-to-coast who are counting on us to champion efforts to make life more affordable for all Canadians. I know you will continue this mission.

Sincerely,
Scott Aitchison
MP Parry Sound—Muskoka

The government intends to appoint Drew Dilkens, Mayor of the City of Windsor, as Chair and Cheryl Fort, Mayor of the Township of Hornepayne, as the Vice Chair. Abstract
Canadian law commits all levels of government to the progressive realization of the human right to adequate housing. In this report, we argue that unrepresentative public consultation combined with restrictive planning regulations prevent or delay much-needed new housing, especially for low-income and marginalized households. Recent reforms intended to streamline planning decisions inhibit local democracy while failing to address the human right to housing. After reviewing and evaluating some innovative Canadian practices, we use Toronto as a case study to propose a model for an improved public consultation system focused on rights-based outcomes and processes.

Description
This report is accompanied by a policy brief, which is part of a series that summarizes original research published by the School of Cities for an audience of policymakers, offering a synthesis of key points and targeted recommendations. All policy briefs in the series are available at https://schoolofcities.utoronto.ca/research-publications/policy-briefs/

"Housing delayed is housing denied" isn't just a saying. There are carrying costs associated with delays. Non-profits don't have a lot of room in their budgets. So affordable units get reduced. If we're asking for more consultation, let's tell the public the price tag. In this case, $9 million.
“That building cost us $9 million more than it would have originally, because it took so long to get a development permit,” says Greenwood-Lee. “What that meant was we had less deeply affordable units.”

This building was made possible by the Avenues Policy that Toronto passed in Feb 2025. Although this section of King was technically still low-rise Neighbourhood because of delays in policy implementation, it was identified as a new Avenue for mid-rise development.
Map of Toronto with existing and new Avenues areas highlighted in brown and magenta, respectively.Land Use
The proposed development is located along King Street West which is identified in the
Official Plan as an Avenue, where growth and intensification should be directed. The
proposed development also introduces at grade retail to activate the ground floor and facilitate sustainable and complete communities through streetscape improvements and
a private open space that will be publicly accessible to the public.
The proposal supports a balance of diverse residential, commercial and institutional
uses consistent with the Mixed Use Areas designation. The temple replaces the existing
temple that is currently on site, which is strongly supported by the Tibetan community.
The application further proposes a new private daycare, which meets an identified need
in the community. The proposed units, including the rental replacement units, support a
range and mix of housing that is consistent with the Official Plan and the Growing Up
Guidelines. The proposed land use is appropriate.
