the scarborough busway should inspire the city to look into longer, more permanent busways on available right-of-ways that can produce rapid transit speeds at cheaper cost and timelines. the one with greatest potential, i think, is finch east. this would transform east-west travel in scarborough.

Hard to overstate how crazy this is. Vancouver planners designed the multiplex zoning so that multiplexes would be barely competitive with single-family houses. If we cared about housing supply, we would make them *more* attractive, so they outcompete SFHs.

Technically, it’s not the government. Engineering in Canada is a self-regulating profession, the provinces have delegated the responsibility of regulation to engineering associations. The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer is independent of that, overseen by the Corporation of Seven Wardens.

Nerdy fact, but legally speaking use of the title “software engineering” or “software engineer” without being a licensed professional engineer in your province is illegal. The associations may fine you up to $25000 for unauthorized title use, and the public can file complaints too.

I disagree. The biggest problem with our transit is the fractured thinking. We can and should expand subway capacity both within Toronto (like extending the Ontario Line west) and outside Toronto to surrounding dense suburbs to support regional transportation needs. The funding can be figured out.

Update for #TorontoSubway from Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay on LinkedIn: The TTC speed restrictions that have been seen around Queen Station are due to active construction underneath for the Ontario Line, watching any settlement constantly. @ttcriders.bsky.social www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
Morning Ontario.

As you are reading this, immediately below the tracks for Line 1 at Queen Station, Metrolinx is working with Ontario Transit Group - Ontario Line - Southern Civil, Stations & Tunnel to excavate the future Ontario Line station.

Any time you do significant work like this directly underneath active tracks is a time for maximum safety and care. If you have recently heard our partners at TTC announcing the need for reduced speeds through this zone - it is because of these works. Both agencies are literally monitoring to see if anything above these works are shifting by a matter of millimetres!

Here you can see drilling rigs installing bolts, as well as the application of a shortcrete concrete layer to the open excavation face.

OTG has already excavated shafts on Queen on both the west and east sides of Yonge. The work being done now will connect these two shafts. When the tunnel boring machine arrives, they will pull it through the excavated station and relaunch on the east side and continue tunnelling towards Moss Park!

So many issues come from Unions platforms. Why bother through running when it takes so long to load/unload. Why not do airport style loading on Via if you have to treat the platform like a jetway. Level boarding seems like an unneeded improvement when the platform width limits loading/unloading

So I took a course on this as part of my BASc (just reviewing my text). All provinces have EA processes. The federal IA doesn’t replace it. Instead since 1998, the federal and provincial EAs are “harmonized” which does NOT transfer jurisdiction but coordinate approval processes & submissions.
