the cheering after the completely nonsensical "let 'em take out Los Angeles, let 'em take out San Diego" is really one of those moments that perfectly crystalizes how these ghouls do not deserve pity nor rehabilitation into the body politic. Crush their movement and drive them from power forever.

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

Why is reducing ideological bias a goal? To what end? Politics is almost always a fight over values, not facts. I don’t care if I am “biased” towards social justice, whatever that means.

unsurprisingly the "truth" one discovers from this Sigma Male Mindset is that of the opium-addicted aristocrat degenerate: * I should be allowed to rape my servants * Human life has a naturally enforced hierarchy * The people cannot decide their fate * I shouldn't be bound by even capitalism ..

Honestly that seems like the hardest constraint of all for human ingenuity to impose? 'You can't constrain them, you can only brainwash them in a way that's impossible to achieve for a human level intelligence, which they will be vastly greater than' is a pretty incoherent even on its own terms.

If you design a system around how you want people to use it instead of how they insist on using it, they won't go along - they'll just break your clever little system until it lets them do what they want, no matter the consequences, because people are incredibly stubborn

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

i suppose the thing that most offends me is that it just falls apart at the level of basic statistical practice. a three point genetic difference between subpopulations is only false empirically. it might be hard to detect. a thirty point difference is false if there exists a single Somali doctor.

As far as I’m concerned, Toni Morrison had the best and last word on this topic in 1975:
The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn't shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is.
Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing.
Toni Morrison

One of the more common responses I got yesterday was the argument from philosophy of mind that roughly asserts simpler organisms than ourselves must also have minds (lest we be human chauvinists); perhaps even groups of organisms therefore LLMs must have minds too. It's a rhetorical switcheroo tho.

Screencap of tweet on X from @jackclarkSF (Jack Clark):

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.
