I will say it is funny watching OpenAI boast about solving a complex math problem using millions of dollars of compute (and someone else’s work) all while remaining unable to solve the most obvious math problem (how to make their services profitable)

It's really amazing that with how much hardware has advanced over the last 15 years or so, pretty much all of it has gone into privacy violation endeavors, as opposed to just making shit work better.

It is also the kind of thing that should genuinely worry AI boosters. Even if you think Masayoshi Son is a complete moron or lunatic, this guy sunk $64 billion into OpenAI, four times what he invested in WeWork. He has the reverse Midas touch, no matter how much he loves golden geese

Tech industry really feels like a power keg ready to blow. The WSJ did a whole story about Oracle’s debt and how banks can’t resell it very easily because of the risk. Cursor acquisition isn’t really an acquisition yet. Deepseek 4 drops on a Thursday night. Jensen Huang slightly losing it too.

The data speaks for itself:
A graph in xkcd style titled 'ADVERTISING REVENUE PROJECTIONS (based on two data points six seconds apart)'. Two red dots sit at the origin representing $0 revenue at Tuesday 10:00:00 AM and $3,000 revenue at Tuesday 10:00:06 AM. A bold blue line labeled 'Best fit line (n=2, R²=1.0)' connects them and rockets upward to $102 BILLION by 2030. The caption reads 'The data speaks for itself'. The line is technically correct, which is the best kind of correct.

Incredible things happening at OpenAI per @theinformation.com. Sam Altman is rushing the company toward IPO despite his CFO’s concerns about compute spend and revenue growth. Now Sam Altman is leaving her out of financial planning for compute. Perfect! www.theinformation.com/articles/ope...
The Takeaway
→ OpenAl is committing billions of dollars years in advance to help finance data centers.
→ Friar last year began reporting to the head of applications instead of to Altman.
→ Altman has excluded her from some conversations related to financial plans.
I Powered by Deep ResearchThose people said Altman has excluded her from some conversations related to the company's financial plans. For instance, in recent months he left Friar out of a conversation about server spending with leaders at one of OpenAl's top investors, one of these people said. Her absence was noticeable and awkward,
given that a previous conversation on the same topic included her, according to an attendee.
A different person who attended a senior-level meeting at OpenAI with Altman earlier this year said it was unusual that Friar was not invited, as it involved a discussion of major financial decisions. She told some colleagues earlier this year that she didn't believe the company would be ready to go public in 2026, because of the procedural and organizational work needed and the risks from its spending commitments, according to a person who spoke to her. She said she wasn't sure yet whether OpenAI would need to pour so much money into obtaining AI servers in the coming years or whether its revenue growth, which has been slowing, would support the commitments, said the person who spoke to her.

Most of this week I’ve spent trying to find data center campuses of over 100mw that are actually anywhere near being built and the answer is that most are not, and several large projects effectively don’t exist. I’m not sure people understand how few of them are actually indeed construction.

This will end up being likely a monologue and part of the intro of this week's premium, but every single person that wrote a "Sora 2 is destroying Hollywood" piece should be apologizing to their audiences and to the entertainment industry for deliberately misleading and scaring people in TV/Cinema
Per The Journal, emphasis mine:

CEO Sam Altman announced the changes to staff on Tuesday, writing that the company would wind down products that use its video models. In addition to the consumer app, OpenAI is also discontinuing a version of Sora for developers and won’t support video functionality inside ChatGPT, either.

Oh, okay! The app that CNBC said was “challenging Hollywood” and “freaking out the movie industry” and The Hollywood Report would suggest could somehow challenge Pixar and was Sam Altman successfully “playing Hollywood” and The Ankler said was OpenAI “going to war with Hollywood” as it “shook the industry” and Deadline said made Hollywood “sore” and Boardroom said was in a standoff with Hollywood and the LA Times said was “deepening a battle between Hollywood and OpenAI” and “igniting a firestorm in Hollywood” and Puck said had “Hollywood panicking” and TechnoLlama said was “the end of copyright as we know it” and Slate said was a case of AI "crushing Hollywood as it we’ve known it” is completely dead a little more than five months after everybody claimed it was changing everything.

It’s almost as if everybody making these proclamations was instinctually printing whatever marketing copy had been imagined by the AI labs to promote compute-intensive vaporware, and absolutely nobody is going to apologize to the people working in the entertainment industry for scaring the fuck out of them with ghost stories! Every single person who blindly repeated that Sora existed and was changing everything should be forced to apologize to their readers!

I cannot express the sheer amount of panic that spread through every single part of the entertainment industry as a result of these specious, poorly-founded mythologies spread by people that didn’t give enough of a shit to understand what was actually going on. Sora 2 was always an act of desperation - an attempt to create a marketing cycle to prop up a tool that burned as much as $15 million a day that most o…

Generative AI subscriptions are sold at a subsidy because the companies in question know that if they charged their actual costs nobody would pay. LLMs lack the efficacy or defined outcomes that makes software valuable, and if that wasn't the case, AI labs wouldn't need subscriptions at all.

This is one of the best mainstream pieces of A.I. criticism I've ever read, and it is somehow on CNN. @amorrow.bsky.social is far ahead
Look, I want to live a cancer-free utopia where I only have to work a few hours a week and there’s no poverty and stuff just works. But do I believe that generative AI is the key to unlocking that fantasyland? I do not. And no tech pioneers have proven their case.

Generative AI from large language models like ChatGPT and Claude are really good at some very specific stuff: They can summarize documents, write dumb emails, help kids cheat on their homework, and even recommend summer reading lists so obscure not even the authors knew they’d written them. Heck, they could probably generate this newsletter and mimic my voice.

But they hit their limits fast. They hallucinate. They get basic facts wrong. They are susceptible to manipulation. (And those are all things we human beings can do just fine on our own.)
If AI companies can take these handy, quasi-reliable text predictors and turn them into an economic revolution, fine. But that seems so far off in the future that Amodei’s warnings feel more like an ad than a PSA. It’s on them to show their work: Show us how AI could be so destructive and how Anthropic can fix it — rather than just shouting about the risks.
