Chasing the shiny bits in the dark. Punishing my legs for not being rocket packs. Passionate about density, transit, walkability, and cycling infrastructure. Recovered “avid cyclist”. Big YIMBY. Seattle, Capitol Hill, but I’m not cool. He/him.

Convincing poor Whites in the 17th and 18th centuries that at least they’re not one of “those people” was one of the intentional side effects of chattel slavery. That project, by every measure, was and remains immensely successful.

Frequently when I hear an incredibly popular song out in the world, my first thought is “oh hey, it’s that Weird Al song” and only after hearing more will I realize it’s the original, which I’d never heard before that.

Alert 9/26-28: Biking and walking path will remain usable during weekend Spokane Street Bridge closure
2024 photo from SDOT showing workers trying to fix the damaged gate arm after a collision. People will be able to walk and bike across the Spokane Street Swing Bridge over the Duwamish River this weekend. Signs have been warning about an upcoming bridge closure, but that only affects the general vehicle lanes because crews are working to repair a gate that was damaged in a 2024 collision. The trail next to the roadway will not be affected. It's nice to be able to post a bike alert about the swing bridge that is actually good news for people walking and biking.

I want to be able to understand my technology. I do not want technology that has been programmed to emulate knowing me.
Out of date meme stating:

Tech enthusiasts: My entire house is smart.

Tech workers: The only piece of technology in my house is a printer and I keep a gun next to it so I can shoot it if it makes a noise I don't recognize.

Out of date because most tech workers have now fallen for the grift of technology that “knows” you.

Opera should not be elite. It should be entertainment for the masses. The stories are simple and melodramatic. The characters are largely fundamentally good or evil. The visuals are over the top. The audience should be boisterously engaged with the performance, not sitting quietly.

GenAI is like Elon Musk in that it can seem very smart if you don’t actually think about it, but as soon it makes assertions about a subject you actually know about, it becomes incredibly apparent how dumb it is.

Drivers don’t frolic and play. Drivers don’t partake of warm sunny days with more than their fingertips. Drivers don’t build community. Drivers, who most of our public right-of-way is dedicated to, are trapped, inhuman and going mad, in their comfort pods until they find a precious parking space.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

The only reason drivers think there is a “war on cars” is they’ve been given everything for the span of living memory (2-3 generations), including being able to drive illegally and dangerously, so telling them they have anything less than carte blanche feels like an assault on their rights.
