So I’m seeing people freak out about Brazil and I get it because there was this belief that “if you lock up the person on top, you end the movement” and the Brazil election killed that belief. I think it’s clear that there is no “that was easy” button. We’re in this fight for the rest of our lives

yeah, my own no-bullshit answer is, in no small part, “practice being grateful”, but that’s a v hard thing to just broadly paint with (even if it is generally accepted by every religious/meditative tradition on earth, it’s uhhh kinda napalm online, in public)

This feels dead on. To raise a bit of a prompt: what do people think is the alternative to present to people who say “my life feels empty”? A. “Don’t look to politics for it” B. “You have no reason to/shouldn’t feel that way” C. “We have a better way to find meaning” D. Don’t care about these votes

A lot of people are going to be so fucking ashamed by the end of this that they will not remember supporting Trump. That’s better than the alternatives we have available now.

It really is a case of "oh these long standing systems that kept the majority in power are being challenged ... welp time to burn it down!" There is a reason why BLM and George Floyd haunt the global far right. It was a case of the world saying "a white man murdered a black man, fuck that"

Like yes the broad form of this is he sold impunity & cruelty & the promise of wealth, but crucially this involved telling lies of all sorts that voters wanted to hear, including things that obscured those promises, like vowing to protect Medicare or insisting he loved "the gays"

I hate to say it but there's something to the theory that evangelical churches have a role in the rise of fascism around the world The churches themselves are reactionary vs. Catholics, voters who convert also shift in their voting patterns towards self interest

really kinda sucks that, across the globe, we don’t have majorities of voters who think far right authoritarianism is bad If I had to sum it up it seems like 40% of voters are anti authoritarian 40% of voters are pro authoritarian 20% of voters just want cheap burgers

The emergence of "It's not my job to educate you" leftism in the 2010's has been incredibly self-destructive. Avoiding debate might be good for your mental health in the short term. But while you hid in your safe space, your enemies were talking to people, convincing them.

Right. Seems like we're saying the same thing but from different perspectives. As a nation, the best thing that can happen is Trump just plays golf every day for the next two years. As a party, the worst thing that can happen is Trump gets to play golf every day for two years.

Yep. Controlling appointments, the calendar, the committee chairs (no more anti transgender poison pills being shoved into funding bills forcing do or die votes) will not reverse the damage that Trump has done, but it will prevent more from being done (easily). But I don't see any veto overrides.

Bingo. Even if they flip the Senate AND scrap the filibuster, Trump can veto anything he wants until noon on 1/20/29. Edit: Yes, they should pass positive policy stuff anyway, I just meant that people need to understand that it's possible NONE of it will actually be implemented due to his veto.

A limited defense I’ll make of Los Angeles is that many people who think it looks like garbage are only thinking about the external. Inside that forgettable sunbaked stripmall is a restaurant that would be the nicest and most memorable dining experience in 50 miles anywhere else in the world.

An interesting aesthetic microcosm of this I’ve noticed is that the public exteriors of European cities are beautiful & walkable, while the interiors often feel weirdly cheap & chintzy to me as an American. In the US there’s lots of sprawl that looks like shit externally but is nice inside.

The fact that Texas is growing so quickly where states like CA, despite being literal paradise, is not is a huge part of conservative lore. How bad can conservative ugliness really be when people are voting with their feet?

Optimistic take: realistically when things like MAGA fail and fade away, a lot of supporters will pretend they were against it, or at least ambivalent, the whole time. This guy minimizing his support for Trump is a harbinger for when a lot of people will claim they never supported him.

One of my hotter takes is that the dominance of bourgeois values and all the attendant tastes, aesthetics, etc., how one navigates the world, was load-bearing for liberal democracies, and social media eliminating that as something aspirational or desirable has been broadly a disaster

Like, you’re simply not going to convince me crustpunk/hippie communist culture is better than corporate culture until you cope with the fact that counterculture 100% expects people to be young, hot, and sexually available and corporate culture expressly disavows this and enforces it
