Some tips on how to make your protest more efficient from me, the guy who is diametrically opposed to your specific cause as well as protesting in general.

i think a lot of ppl are made to feel stupid or inadequate at various points in their lives an internalise this. most ppl are not given the tools/context to access some of the more challenging material that's in wider culture, and it's harder to delineate a walk from a run from a hike, literarily.

i was just having that feeling of like "oooh omg she's so mad at this guy" about two essays critiquing a seminal book in fitzgerald scholarship, both taking v different sides of the interpretive fence and subtweeting each others positions. it's basically the same thing as Bravo shows but slower.

reality tv is all happening in the moment and dynamics change so quickly and i feel like i've gotta hold it all in RAM while everything is happening. i don't mind picking apart a scene or episode w ppl but i find it v complex

apple of dusk @applecorething.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
complex social dynamics being laid out through text obv comes w complications and chronology challenges, but it's still like a puzzle you can piece together and go back over bits. and fun uncertainty of whether things are in direct conversation w each other, like this did writer read that last post.

i find reality tv hard to watch bc i find it socially overwhelming and tiring. i totally understand how ppl with different brains find it so compelling, and i've just realised i basically enjoy the exact same thing but through text instead. whether it's online dynamics or academic beef.

to me the benefit of reading is only going up bc the capitalistic powers that access ur through phone is so bad for our brains. i think ppl conflate the benefits of reading for pleasure and fun with like, reading to learn/study/enrich/think hard. both are good ! habit makes the latter possible imo

Violence comes in many forms and can be either slow and grinding or sudden and percussive. What a victory of messaging it is then to be able to define what violence is and what violence is not and expect for good reason that much of the western world will adopt your terms. Leaving your enemy having to fight back against a force that isn't even hitting them.

I think it should go without saying that I abhor war crimes against civilians even in what I consider to be a just cause of liberation. And Palestinians yearning for escape from decades of oppression and confinement and apartheid is indeed a just cause.

I also think that it is very convenient that the dominant power in any given conflict almost always gets to commit their own war crimes from a remove via blockade and sanction or missile and bomb. Each resulting individual civilian death observed from an abstract sanitized distance in the form of a building collapsing. Being made to collapse.

A lot of people are wedded to this ide

anyway these have been my thoughts. just read smth where someone said "i've read 65 books this year" and i was like "oh gosh im behind this random person!" and remembered i've actually rly enjoyed slowly reading essays abt f scott fitzgerald and im gonna keep doing that. reading isn't quantity babes

carving out time to write with an ambition to think better through words creates the space where you can push urself. or you can write stream of consciousness every day and that's also good for ur brain. gently unscrambles u. and looking at a full page of writing is nice even if it's nonsense.
110
apple of dusk @applecorething.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
but idk for me realising the ppl w the beautiful journals were writing extremely aesthetic book reviews w the most shallow dogshit interpretations reminded me that 1. their job is pretty journal and 2. writing crap shallow thoughts is actually fine and good. just write.
151
apple of dusk @applecorething.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
i do think reading crap sets you up to read harder material. so much of reading harder material is having the time space and energy to do so, and carving out a reading habit is a great way to do that if it's your goal. and you can think hard abt crap lit too! you bring yourself to whatever u do

apple of dusk @applecorething.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
and same is kinda true of reading. if u beat urself up for never reading the great books u feel you should read, bouncing off them when u try, feeling too tired and worn out and stupid to enjoy a canon classic, and feeling inadequate bc some ppl read 100 books a year. those 100 books are not bangers
120
apple of dusk @applecorething.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
and i realised i had built up for myself the idea that what u write should be good. it should be smart. it should be like my notes in university when i was planning an essay, or hell it should be an essay that's worth looking back on. that's bullshit just write literally nonsense. it's good for u

one of the things that actually helped me get into writing in a journal every day was seeing those journaling influencers before i deleted instagram. not bc i was influenced to decoratively journal like they do, but bc i paused and read what they aesthetically wrote. and it was crap!

apple of dusk @applecorething.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
one of the things i've been thinking abt lately as i've been reading more and handwriting more is how like. if you read a lot, and handwrite/journal a lot, it's no big deal right. and if you don't and u want to, maybe want to "get back into reading" it feelings onerous, like it's a big deal

Ivan Turgenev's "Execution of Troppmann" is a short essay, published in 1870, that gives a first-hand account of the writer attending a public execution in Paris. Turgenev's details how the drunk, unruly crowd turned a somber moment into a carnival. A deeply moving essay; I encourage you to read it.

That time of year again so went looking at this year's forms and it shows the benefit of kicking up a fuss. I'd notified TENI, they'd checked with medical people if there was any basis for asking this, there was none so they raised it with the HSE last year and thankfully it's been dropped this year
