"We charge you with genocide." Grim, inane and preposterous. One day these people will realise that words mean something and you shouldn't just string them together randomly to make yourself feel better.

Modern racism is fascinatingly stupid, in that in the 90s and 2000s, there were all sorts of racist things people would say about mixed race people but they weren’t confused and perplexed by your existence.

This whole, "everything I don't like is Israeli," thing people keep doing is getting closer and closer to just being mask off Nazis. And Sunrise doing it is making a bid for a red-brown ecofascist alliance based on shared conspiratorial thinking blaming Israel for everything they don't like.

The people nitpicking the welcome change (or clarification) of tone/position are fundamentally unserious about the threat and the extent of the drift to this point. We 100% need conservative politicians to start speaking like this, and any objection as to the form is a nth order concern right now

Endlessly wearying that so many responses to this section of the speech are to point out that Badenoch's worked examples are wrong. Sure, but, in a very real sense, who cares?

This is a positive development, full stop. Anti-racism norms matter, elite cues on anti-racism norms matter, a broad political consensus on anti-racism norms matter so a strong signal from the leader of a party which has been blurring red lines lately is good news.

Maturity is resisting the urge for a gotcha about the comments regarding Barnes and Wright, and recognising that instead she’s said something that is necessary to be said, and this is a first step to recalibrating the conversation away from ethno-nationalism.

Actually interesting section on Reform. "To those who say 'unite the right', we are not uniting with that". Says she doesn't want to debate if her mixed-race children are English. "We must not let these people take us backwards." This is a very welcome section, which wins a standing ovation.

Let me talk about 7 October 2023. Tbh I'm not comfortable doing so here. I don't trust you. On that day, and in the days following, my experience of social media was deeply, profoundly unpleasant. But a lot changed in my life as a result of the attack and the war. So I may as well share how.

One of the acutely minor consequences of 1,200 people, mostly Israelis, mostly Jews, being murdered by Hamas on 7 October 2023 was finding out just who celebrated, equivocated, or who didn’t say anything at all but magically regained their ability to comment on this brutal conflict a few weeks later

Kane and Unable: my SKETCH of Kemi Badenoch's decision to conduct her broadcast interviews as a tribute to Jeffrey Archer. thecritic.co.uk/kane...

Kemi Badenoch’s broadcast interviews on Tuesday were a touching celebration of someonewhose extravagant boasts and relaxed relationship with reality won the heart of Conservative members. There was also a lot of discussion of Jeffrey Archer.

The Tory leader opened her chat with BBC Breakfast viewers by talking about the bestselling novelist messaging her only the previous day. She would reply with emojis, she said, and we got an image of a somewhat one-sided chat that allowed Archer to allude to his closeness to Top People. Or Badenoch, anyway.

Not, of course, that the Master Storyteller ever felt constrained by the truth. It was a stellar career built on an instinct for what the audience wants to hear, a gift for “inaccurate precis”, and a willingness, when necessary, to simply say things that weren’t true. Sorry, I’ve completely lost track of who I’m writing about.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.
