Has resistance to #antibiotics in Neisseria gonorrhoeae changed over the past 10 years in #Germany? Researchers from the @rki.de examined temporal trends in antibiotic susceptibility of isolates and possible shifts in sexual networks 👇 bit.ly/EUS3334NG #IDSky #STISky #EpiSky #AMR 🧪🛟
Key public health message

What did you want to address in this study and why?

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is common among sexually active men who have sex with men. Antibiotic resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium causing gonorrhoea, can make it harder to treat the disease. We wanted to find out whether resistance to antibiotics in Neisseria gonorrhoeae has changed over the past 10 years in Germany and if some groups are more affected than others.

What have we learnt from this study?

We used data collected from laboratories across Germany in a national surveillance system for gonorrhoea to analyse the development of antibiotic resistance. We found that the bacterium is becoming less responsive to the three antibiotics that we examined. This was especially true for samples from males that were not collected from the genital region.

What are the implications of your findings for public health?

Our findings demonstrate the importance of monitoring antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea. This requires laboratory testing when patients are diagnosed and can help doctors choose appropriate treatments. General STI prevention is important, particularly for men who have sex with men and young heterosexual persons. Easy access to STI testing, timely treatment, safer sex and future vaccination could all help to reduce the spread of gonorrhoea.
