This is worth a read because it eviscerates the narration of "AI solved complex mathematical problems, we can now retire mathematicians" that's currently being pushed by the AI companies. (and in general please remain sceptical of any claims to independent thinking or intent by LLMs)

As someone with more data engineering experience than I wish I had, it is my unfortunate obligation to inform you that if somebody tells you that they are doing this, you are going to need to meticulously check all their work from now on, because they are doing their job badly and cannot be trusted
Post from @anildash.com

People are using open models trained on consensual data to do things like convert PDFs to spreadsheets instead of having to manually copy and paste all the data. It’s taking mundane, rote tasks and making them simpler. Not exciting, but useful.

One of the benefits of AI going forward will be to easily identify people who are incurious, lazy, & shallow. It will be increasingly easy to simply weed them out of work that requires critical thinking & problem solving skills. The problem is that AI is revealing just how *many* of them there are.

Please consider not saying that some AI models or some statistical models are good, useful, beneficial, whatever else positive, in science if it's not your research area. It's ok not to know things. It's ok not to both side things. It's ok to ask colleagues who are experts.

Actually ai is literally so good that we can’t actually capture its secret powerful “dark outputs” in silly things like “metrics”
We are at risk of having an event on the scale of the Industrial Revolution where most of the new output is invisible even as businesses spend increasingly large amounts on Al services.
Types of Dark Output
Dark output is Al-enabled economic value that exists but is not visible, or is badly distorted, in GDP, prices, labor statistics, or industry accounts.
We categorize this into two buckets:
• Substitution dark output is work that was previously done by humans and is now done by AI. In our Dark Output Monitor we have identified roughly $1.5T in tasks that current generation AI could substantially augment or
automate.
• New dark output is new work done by AI that wasn't previously being done by humans (probably because it was too expensive to do until Al made it cheap). In the long run this is likely to be much larger than the substitution side. There are anecdotal signs that a large fraction of current token spend is for new work that wasn't previously paid for rather than replacing existing work. But the exact magnitude is opaque as it sits behind the anonymizing curtain of tokens.
Identifying if a specific Al task is creating value and how much would likely be difficult even if you had the full conversation trace, as it is the national accounts will at best see Al revenue.

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.
