They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Last weekend I was a referee at the tryouts for Team Scotland Roller Derby. It was very fun! A lot of quite tricky reffing, and I got to help the national team! Mark Harris took some great photos (hard to do in a sports hall) Also: it's hard to be neutral when some of your best pals are trying out!
Amy, a tall woman, is roller skating indoors and wearing a striped referee top. She’s pointing to a skater on her right, who’s slight shorter, wearing a black top, and a helmet cover with a star. Both are smiling and having a great time! Amy, a tall woman, is roller skating indoors wearing a striped referee top in the foreground. She’s pointing to another skater in the background, who’s wearing a black top and a helmet cover.

there is no skill these people don't consider a means to an end they want the experience machine they're begging for their AI models to create it, to hook them up to the machine
excerpt from Wikipedia's "Experience Machine":
The thought experiment: Nozick describes a machine that could provide whatever desirable or pleasurable experiences a subject could want. In this thought experiment, psychologists have figured out a way to stimulate a person's brain to induce pleasurable experiences that the subject could not distinguish from those they would have apart from the machine. He then asks, if given the choice, would the subject prefer the machine to real life?

I don't really have a point, except that it sucks because I doubt I'll find any work in programming at this point that doesn't require that I use AI, so it looks like it's going to be it for me pretty quick

Amy Alex Parent @amyinorbit.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And I won't use it because I have so many objections to the thing, and also because I happen to actually really enjoy programming and I didn't get into this career to talk to sycophantic plagiarism software. It feels like I'm weeks to being told I have to use it or quit, and it's looking like quit

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.
