It would be good if there was just, like, one good thing in the world, wouldn't it? Like if a nice thing happened, or if someone did something that made things better rather than worse, or if people weren't needlessly, pointlessly, cruel in an endless tragic cycle.

one thing I tell myself these days, when everything feels irreparable, is that you don't have to fix everything, and you never have to go it alone. if you find one thing you can do consistently in the company of others, you will have accomplished so much more than you can rightly enumerate.

I understand why many people have not so positive feelings and associations with Springsteen. I'm not going to argue with that. This is also one of the most well written albums by an artist in his generation. In many ways, it's a whole encapsulation of the burning house MLK talked about.

Thread. There is a clear pattern here. The first sign of a bubble popping is when the ads (in the US) are telling "ordinary" white people to invest. But you know it will pop *right away* when they start targeted advertising to *Black* investors.

DUSK IN WINTER

The sun sets in the cold without friends
Without reproaches after all it has done for us
goes down believing in nothing
When it has gone I hear the stream running after it
It has brought its flute it is a long way

Another welcome acquisition. The quirky irony of the title has always raised a smile - no wonder it’s been lodged in the memory for years. Read the title story today - and then happily reread, knowing I’d missed a few things first time around… And of course, it’s all beautifully written. #booksky

Kuroneko is a brilliant feminist ghost story that really manages to go so freaking hard in terms of how it shows the brutal consequences of what comes with violence and their serious effects on us, but it also critiques upon the issues of sexual violence and systemic oppression through arrogance.

it’s incredible that dogs have figured out how to outsource their cognition to humans. they will literally stare at you and it makes you uncomfortable enough to try to figure out what they want. the dog might not even know! but you’ll start doing things for the dog until you do something they want.

I remember realising this nearly twenty years ago, reading Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near, where he talks about how in a post-scarcity world where everything was utterly free, you'd have to have some technical means to protect intellectual property.

Tilda Swinton's Karen Crowder in "Michael Clayton" is a good example of "common" evil, in a world without morality. You can see her rationalizing everything she does, getting deeper into it, losing all perspective, until she's justifying murders as being for the good of the shareholders

$64K is more or less what I make as an adjunct professor, teaching at three different NYC schools; the thought that if I'd stayed in journalism, and reached what I would have once felt was a somewhat exalted position (Harpers!), only to make the *same amount* as a hustling adjunct... well.
"He went on to spend a decade at Harper's, editing serious long-form articles for an ever-dwindling audience. For this he was, as recently as 2023, paid $64,000 a year: less than when he started, adjusted for inflation."

Top five Costello for me. Happy memories of the pair of them on a documentary chortling together as they tried to come up with a slogan to sell the record and eventually settled on "Because it's a lonely world - Costello and Bacharach". "God Give Me Strength" is *jaw-droppingly* good.
