“I get it,” he says quietly. He glances Stede’s way again, looking conflicted. “I didn’t, back then. But… eventually I did.”
It’s the last thing on earth Stede expects to hear, the last thing he probably deserves. His brow furrows. “You… did?”
Ed shrugs, gaze dropping back to the floor. He’s grinding his boot into the tile again. Stede wonders what he’s imagining crushing underfoot.
“I mean, he was fuckin’ scary. Your dad. You needed to feel safe, needed some kind of control. I get that.” He shrugs. “You know what my dad was like, after all.”
Stede grimaces and nods. “I do, yes. Worse than mine, even.”
“Nah, don’t—” Ed waves a tired, dismissive hand. “Don’t do that, man. Yours was shit. Mine was just shit in a different way.” He huffs, almost a laugh. “He’s dead too, by the way. For years now.”
Stede blinks in surprise. “Oh. Oh, I’m, um—well, I’m—”
“I’m not.” Ed gives him a humorless half-grin. He sighs, sinking back to rest his weight against the back of a nearby sofa.
The sofa, in fact. The very one where they last kissed, touched, held each other, laughed together. Still here after all these years, trapping the memories between threads of upholstery.

Stede had rather thought that if he touched it, it would burn him.
“Anyway,” Ed adds, waving vaguely at him. “Go on, then. Think you were talking about how fucking terrible it must have been for me, and yeah, it was. Anything else?”
Stede bites his lip. The words are cutting, but the tone isn’t. The tone has shifted, almost lightened, like rays of sunlight breaking through the ocean he’s been drowning in. He wonders if he’s getting any closer to the surface.
“I think,” he says, soft and careful, “that part of me was afraid for you, too. That your father would find out too, and that it would be even worse for you.” He scoffs lightly at himself, glancing down. “I knew it was an excuse. But I—I told myself I was protecting you.”
“Bullshit.” Stede glances up to find Ed glaring again. “Should’ve let me worry about that. I knew how to protect myself, man. You were always so fuckin’ worried about me, but all I ever did was survive that house. I was a pro by then, trust me.”
Stede sinks into himself again. “I know,” he sighs. “I know. But I didn’t know how not to worry.”
“Yeah. I know.” Ed rolls his eyes. “You were a pro by then.”

"Shit, sorry," he whispers, and it takes a moment for Stede to work out what Ed could possibly be apologising for. But then, he feels it. The unmistakable brush of Ed's erection against Stede's thigh.

And oh. Oh. Ed is aroused. By this. By Stede.

Stede's stomach swoops. He had asked Ed for slow only a handful of hours ago, but right now, Stede wants to touch. He's not sure he's ever wanted anything more in his life.

"Ed…" Stede whispers, as he places a splayed palm on his belly. With excruciating slowness, giving Ed all the time in the world to tell him no, Stede moves his hand lower. Ed's muscles twitch beneath Stede's hand when his fingertips reach the waistband of Ed's soft sleep pants. Stede pauses, waits for any indication that his touch would be welcome.

Across the pillow, limned in moonlight, Ed nods.

i feel like i don't really have anything for wip wednesday this week, so here's something from the next trucker fic, which i keep thinking about diving back into lately. (apologies if i've already shared this bit; i lose track. if i did, it was probably at least a year ago.)

“Ed, darling, will you please breathe?” his partner said, a gentle tease in his voice despite the sympathy in his eyes as Ed pulled up beside an unfamiliar little blue Corolla, which he figured had to belong to Doug. He put the truck in park and cut the ignition, turning to Stede with a deep breath and a heavy sigh. Stede smiled fondly and reached over to cup his cheek, stroking it with his thumb a little before giving him two little pats like a fucking kid. “You’ll be fine.”

“How’d you get so cool all of the sudden?” he groused, catching Stede’s wrist and placing a kiss over his pulse. “I’m not supposed to be the only one shitting myself over this.”

Stede laughed and leaned in for a quick kiss. “Please don’t shit yourself,” he joked. “And rest assured, I’m nervous, too, but they’re my family and I know them pretty well, I like to think, so I suppose it’s a different sort of anxiety. I just want you all to like each other.”

Ed sighed again, trying his damndest to settle down. “Hold my hand a minute before we get out?” he requested, and it felt a little silly, but Stede did it with absolutely no fuss, lacing their fingers together and putting his other hand over the back of Ed’s, thumb stroking gently over his tattooed skin. “Gonna be real hard not to be all over you all weekend.”
