Englishness & Britishness have never been fixed concepts. They have been redefined & debated for centuries. Shakespeare did it loads. John of Gaunt’s lament for an imagined glorious past England vs the present crap one from Richard II is like a really well written version of a Tory conference speech
This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,
This nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings,
Fear'd by their breed and famous by their birth,
Renowned for their deeds as far from home,
For Christian service and true chivalry,
As is the sepulchre in stubborn Jewry,
Of the world's ransom, blessed Mary's Son,
This land of such dear souls, this dear dear land,
Dear for her reputation through the world,
Is now leased out, I die pronouncing it,
Like to a tenement or pelting farm:
England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.
Ah, would the scandal vanish with my life,
How happy then were my ensuing death!

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

More examples of drivers who think doing fast, reckless weaving in and out of very slow traffic is acceptable. Just feels like more and more bad driving around.

Long drive from Sheffield to Broadstairs & back, & can't work out lf there is many more bad drivers or I'm forgetting it's always been like this. Four lane motorways definitely have a huge amount of terrible drivers, endemic lane hogging & no ability or willingness to do proper overtaking.

If universities aren’t a priority, at least give them certainty
With Labour Party conference underway and universities still well down the queue, Ian Turgoose argues the sector’s most realistic ask is certainty about what government wants it to look like

Even latter I know i don't catch since stopping listening to Radio 1 (having got to a point where I found most of the DJs grating).

Pretty certain there is something absolutely enormous missing from this list. I think I am still shocked that the mass murder of Palestinians is something that is seemingly either forgotten or not worth mentioning. But of course in reality I shouldn't be shocked about the worth placed on such lives.

This was a striking bit about Rushdie’s upbringing where ‘people would talk about everything’
He says at one point in the film 'it didn't occur to me that I wasn't allowed to say these things' by which he means to treat Islam with the roughhouse lack of solemnity with which he treats everything else. "That's because I grew up in a very free-thinking, secularised, Indian-Muslim family, in which people would talk about everything. My father and his friends would sit around in the evening and talk about everything. They liked talking about philosophy. They would discuss the existence of God - and non-existence of God even. Some of his friends were communists and certainly didn't believe in religion.
Others were quite theological. But everybody argued about everything, and, eavesdropping on these conversations, 12-year-old me thought you could talk about whatever you want, and I still think that?

You know that saying about how the way they treat asylum seekers is the way they’d treat everyone else if they thought they could get away with it? Well,
The Tories said the reduced subsistence allowance would be loaded onto pre-paid card that would not allow cash withdrawals, and would "prevent spending" on alcohol, cigarettes, or gambling.
The party is yet to detail how its proposal would work, but shadow welfare secretary Helen Whately said it would be "a version" of the pre-paid Aspen card issued to asylum seekers living in government-funded accommodation.
These cards cannot be used to make contactless, telephone or internet payments, whilst asylum seekers whose applications have failed cannot withdraw cash.

‘This should be condemned by any thinking human’: film industry rallies behind NAZA directors
Backing comes after Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor were threatened with having their citizenship revoked and accused of treason Film industry heavyweights across the globe have expressed solidarity with Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, the Oscar-winning Israeli directors of documentary NAZA, who have been threatened with having their citizenship revoked by Israel’s culture minister, who accused them of “treason against the state”. NAZA, which was produced by the Guardian, is named for an acronym euphemistically used by Israel’s intelligence service to indicate how many civilians it expects to die in an airstrike on Gaza. It includes interviews with 24 Israeli military or intelligence soldiers and officers who outlined the AI-powered targeting systems used to bombard Gaza, resulting in the mass killing of Palestinian civilians. Livid that the assisted dying bill being voted down is being painted as religious zealots that all want people to die in agony. Everyone deserves to die in dignity, but they also deserve a robust bill with safeguards that reduces the chance of being coerced into it. That's what we fought for.
