'The Westminster government’s contribution to funding domestic undergraduates studying in England fell in real terms from £8.9 billion in 2012-13 to just £3.3bn in 2024-25, a drop of more than 60 per cent, an analysis has found.'

Also because, quite frankly, a lot of people love to dunk on MPs and the second that anybody raises ‘hm, well, it can be quite a difficult job and there are tricky trade-offs involved and what should be done about them?’ it tends to lead to lots of invective about MPs and we get nowhere.

This is absolutely spot-on. I’m increasingly convinced that our revealed sense of what we expect MPs to do (be good legislators, scrutineers, and deal with ever-increasing amounts of casework and correspondence) is, with current resources, unsustainable.

Great to hear the PM say “We are going to be much prouder in standing up for our values and the rule of law” re foreign information warfare. I wonder if he or the Home Secretary might consider doing the same when it comes to masked vigilantes shutting down infrastructure and harassing the RNLI

This is excellent by @dawnbutlerbrent.bsky.social in outlining the threats MPs face. Sadly, as a highly visable, black woman I suspect she has it worse than most. But its pretty much now universal: every MP experiances the same fears Which raises, as Dawn says, a simply question: why do it?

Hi Parliament
An email:

Hi Parliament,

I came across Parliament and wanted to reach out with a quick idea.

As more people use ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI search tools to discover products and businesses, brand visibility is no longer limited to Google.

I help businesses build visibility […] This includes strategic Reddit/Quora marketing, relevant community participation, and improving the third-party visibility that can support stronger AI search presence over time.

I thought this could be relevant for Perliament.

Would you be open to me sending you a quick overview of how this could work for your brand?

Exactly. Politicians and officials fixate on education because they think they can control it (they can't). But that's just one side of the equation, and a far weaker one. You can't fix supply first, then demand. Has to be demand-led.

Restoration and Renewal drama in week's @privateeyenews.bsky.social No idea if any of this is true or not, but the idea that Whips are involved in a "stitch up" to ensure MPs have the debate and vote they were promised before end of 2025 is an interesting interpretation...
HOYLE-D AGAIN

PARLIAMENT'S

restoration and renewal bods increasingly think they can bypass the opposition of Commons speaker Lindsay Hoyle, who thinks the costs - as much as £39bn - are outrageous.

Labour whips tried to stitch up a pre-recess meeting of the Commons Commission to ensure MPs should soon have a chance to approve phase one of the project (£3bn, kerching kerching).

Officials may be underestimating Hoyle. One of the project team, pressed by Hoyle to explain a knotty architectural problem, breezily assured the old boy that everything was under control and simultaneously winked across the table at the parliamentary clerk. Hoyle saw the wink and exploded, roaring that he would not tolerate cosy backroom deals between his clerks and civil servants. Such was Hoyle's anger the meeting adjourned in disarray.
