Neighborhood update: my hooved neighbors have decided that the old dog park is now a deer park.
Deer grazing at the edge of a closed down dog park. A crooked fence and reflection of the sunset off the hills across a valley in the background.

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

Why You Should Not Let A.I. Write Articles, number 4,398: a "drop tank" holds aviation fuel; it is not a clanking, treaded battlefield horror with a big gun.
"The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk remains one of the most instantly recognizable aircraft from World War II. Designed in the United States and released in 1938, the single-engine, solo piloted fighter plane quickly became a critical workhouse for Allied forces. Over 13,000 units were constructed for the conflict, which saw the P-40 deployed across the Pacific, North African, and European theaters. Early versions featured a 1,000 horsepower Allison engine, although some later iterations included an improved Rolls-Royce Merlin under the hood. Aside from its .50 caliber guns, the P-40 sometimes also boasted bombs and even the ability to drop tanks." The phrase "even the ability to drop tanks" is underlined in red, because they are not the kind of tanks implied, and this sort of tank is not a weapon.

Eastern Washington rattlesnake watch update: www.spokesman.com/stories/2026...
A screenshot of a news story from the Spokesman Review. The section in the screenshot reads:

"As Ness made call after call to get someone to remove the snake, which had eventually nestled itself into someone’s car tire, she became a sort of de-facto traffic cop.

“I stayed outside by the car to keep an eye on the snake. We were directing people around it,” Ness said with a laugh.

Ness continued to call wildlife agencies for help, but was transferred by automated systems back and forth.

“It was a lot of phone tag. Thankfully we knew the person who owned the car.” Ness said. Out of sheer coincidence, the owner had a friend who loved snakes.

“He reached out to his friend. He had been handling snakes for decades,” Ness said. “He was able to come out. He had a snake hook and a terrarium, and he safely released it back into the wild.”

It’s unclear where the snake came from. The Spokesman-Review attempted to reach the snake Wednesday but was unsuccessful."

When people ask me if I have any good stories from when I used to interview rock stars for a living my mind often goes a bit blank, and to be honest a lot of it was quite ordinary and unremarkable, but on the other hand there is this.
24 years ago I was sent to a London pub by a newspaper to interview and drink whisky (no “e” over here) with Lemmy, who was in the band Motorhead and, before that, slightly less famously, Hawkwind and, before that, much less famously, Sam Gopal. We had a good chat: about being from the part of the Midlands north of the River Trent, about books, and about roadying for Hendrix in the mid-60s (him, not me; I was minus nine at the time). When the record company PR sidled over to tell me my time was up, Lemmy waved him away. “No, no, I’m enjoying this,” he said, commandingly. I realised at this point that I had another question I’d been meaning to ask but hadn’t. “Are you scared of anything?” I said to Lemmy. “Nothing,” he replied. Then he paused and frowned for a moment, as if an idea had suddenly occurred to him. “Oh, maybe snakes,” he said. “It’s because they’ve got no shoulders.”
