There's a straight line of performative political cruelty from compulsory drug tests for beneficiaries to ... this. (How long that line is depends on how far we allow our political leaders to continue to mimic a failing state, the US.) #nzpol www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

If you really want to get "more people off welfare and into work", consider not tanking the economy. That typically works better than performative cruelty.
The party also promised:
to provide "intensive, work-focused support" for 30,000 jobseekers who have been on Jobseeker for more than a year, with more funding for employment programmes that support young people into work.
lowering the rate of payment for those who had been on the benefit for two of the previous three years, from 1 April 2028. There would be a smaller reduction for households with dependent children.
those who repeatedly leave employment without good and sufficient reason would face a 26-week non-entitlement period, up from 13 weeks.
from 1 April 2028, the minimum residence period to qualify for main benefits will increase from two years to five years.
Upston said the party was focused on "getting more people off welfare and into work".

The SPCA 2026 election priorities scorecard, assessing where the different political parties stand on key animal welfare issues. Top three parties for animals: Animal Justice Party, Greens, Opportunity. At the bottom: National worst, narrowly ACT next, then what looks like a tie between NZ First and Labour (many 'no position' or 'stance unclear' for these four.) I've progressed to the 'next stage' in the quest for a part-time, fixed-term non-senior comms role. After two hour long interviews (Stages 1 and 2), Stage 3 (no offer doc yet!) involves: MoJ check ✅ Reference checks ✅ And ... two hours of psychømetric testing. Any tips/insights appreciated. 😱

It is clear from various media reports and conversations there is increased speculation about my leadership.

It is my firm belief that division and disunity are a major distraction only 90 days out from the election. I also believe this distraction is unfair to the New Zealand people, and dedicated National Party candidates, supporters and volunteers, when there is so much at stake.

For these reasons, this issue needs to be resolved quickly, and I am calling an urgent in-person Caucus meeting tomorrow at 9:30am in Wellington to resolve the issue.

The ecosystem around New Zealand First is darker than most of our aunties and uncles allow themselves to see. Far-right formations such as Remigration New Zealand trade in the fantasy of removal, of a nation cleansed of migrants of colour, and the same accounts on X that circulate this poison, that recite the great replacement conspiracy theory, also post their loyalty to New Zealand First. Sit with what that conspiracy theory has already done here. It was the ideological architecture of the Christchurch terror attack. Fifty-one Muslims were murdered at prayer by a man convinced that people like us were replacing the white nation, and the rhetorical world that built him now overlaps, account by account, with the online base of a party inside our government, a party that has had a member linked to neo-Nazis. Our political class steps around all of this the way one steps around a puddle on Lambton Quay, careful not to wet the hem of the coalition agreement.
