Bilaterian BMP signaling gradients suggest an ancestral anti-neural role. Study of #cnidarians shows that #BMP signalling promotes neurogenesis; its "anti-neural" function is a side effect of its role in the DV axis @paulknabl.bsky.social @genikhovich.bsky.social @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4dJHoiR
In the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora, BMP signaling is active in ganglionic neurons of the umbrella, the ring nerve and in the rhopalium. Top left: Oral view of the umbrella, black arrowheads highlight the location of the rhopalia (rh). Top right: lateral and frontal detail of the rhopalium anatomy. Bottom, from left to right: pSMAD1/5 activity in the rhopalia, lateral view of the rhopalium, view from the top highlights pSMAD1/5 activity around the stalk, detailed view of the pit eye and the area around it (pSMAD1/5 is observed in a sector of the pit eye retina, the upper lens eye and some cells between the pit eye and the stalk).

🚨 We discovered a new mode of Hox gene regulation in annelids! 🪱 A distal enhancer acts as a "global control region", lifting Hox genes from Polycomb repression. This is reminiscent of Hox gene control in vertebrates, but the two modes likely evolved convergently. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Functional Analysis of Ligand‐Gated Chloride Channels in a Cnidarian Sheds Light on the Evolution of Inhibitory Signaling
We uncover a large variety of putative inhibitory ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) in the phylum Cnidaria, the sister group to all bilaterian animals. Phylogenetic analysis suggests a complex evolut...

Computer science needs more biologists. They are used to: - study systems that are mindbogglingly complex and complicated, - use reductionism to study and describe such systems, using famously clumsy and fiddly tools to collect noisy and incomplete data, (1/2)

Maybe we should revise policies that push postdocs out of academic research too early. It selects for early achievers that remain in one field and risks losing the highest impact people
