#BioC2026 brought the Bioconductor community together in Seattle for three days of science, software and community building. From inspiring talks & posters to workshops, package demos, and the hackathon, it was a great celebration of 25 years of Bioconductor. Read the full recap: bit.ly/4e9Kopr

Coding is more about abstraction of a problem and how its components come together than it is about telling computers what to do. Else we would be coding our GLMMs in C or something. "Not knowing to code" is not knowing how to logically think about problems that might be solvable with a computer.

Damn I am tired of people laughing about Deutsche Bahn. Travel in many other places in Europe and you will discover Germany is trying to do many things right with its railways. A quick blog post / rant from me: jonworth.eu/your-deutsche-… #CrossBorderRail

Your Deutsche Bahn "joke" is no longer funny (if it ever was)
Before attempting my record attempt between Kemijärvi, Finland and Lagos, Portugal, people told me over and over it would break down in Germany. So much so that I even tried to re-but (pre-but?) some of the likely critique. Now, having made the trip, and none of the total

Once again proving that Donald Knuth is much smarter than the rest of us. He stopped using email back in the 1990's. He had a secretary/assistant who filtered it for him, and printed the tiny fraction of emails that might be worthy of his attention.

The next level of aberration: PhD projects that involve setting up a bot to webscrape hundreds of researchers and emailing everyone with questions about their publications or datasets. Who do you think you are? Serious people will soon have no public web presence and no public email address.

I've been trying to respond with a personal email to every request for a PhD or Master thesis placement in my group. But with the flood of AI generated applications that's now coming in every day, this has become impossible.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Been reading biomedical study proposals. It is remarkable how much old-fashioned concepts such as study design, sample size, biostats, "is there a plausible path from the data we'll obtain to the question we state?", have given way to "we'll collect multiomics and AI will figure something out"

I think every major company is looking at open weight AI models and realizing they can just bring them in house with an internal engineering team and cut out the frontier model companies to save money. They have more control and privacy. I really don't see frontier labs surviving this.
