This is all well and good and I will certainly vote but I still couldn’t wager the faintest guess about what Dems hope or plan to do with control of Congress and/or the Senate. I’m not trying to be doomer. They’ve all been banging the campaign drum but I hear no song.

"they really believe it"/"they will try to do it"/"the promises are real" are things that most americans refuse to believe about politicians but if you take them seriously will help you predict political behavior more often than not

There are so many self-indulgent posts on LinkedIn about this and A) This is like me registering “Weapon.com” ahead of the release of Weapons. Different word! B) What‘s the overlap of people who are aware of new OpenAI releases and who type in [word].com to find something?

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Fully agree. I've been on a 🎢 coaster: ititial "good" LLMs made me worried, but revenue has increased 20% in the past year and we don't do AI. Good LLMs create business chaos, and I am a chaos enjoyer. Happy to talk agentic with clients, but the "expert" work is always that: talking. With humans.

Wow. I hadn’t realised how much LLMs had killed StackOverflow (the site where coders traditionally go to ask questions when they’re stuck): “Just before the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, there were more than 100,000 monthly questions asked on the site; last month, there were fewer than 1,500.”

The political ennui I feel lately isn’t doomerism that Dems can’t do well in the mid-terms—I anticipate they will—it’s that I do not trust them to do anything with any power they regain. I’m not even confident they have the slightest idea what they’d do with it.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

I'm convinced that this is just a big a reason for the tariffs as any (misplaced) economic claims: Tariffs give Trump discretionary power, and he likes being the sort of guy who can use govt power on a whim to impress people (in this case), or in return for other favors.

I don't think anyone saying AI Doomsday predictions are "marketing" is suggesting that they're some coordinated comms effort to drum up sales. I think they're saying that repeating baseless claims about the omnipotence of this technology serves as marketing to the people with the pocketbooks.

Two points among many here: 1. Asking students to write without AI is not "trying to make AI go away" 2. If we accept that we can "AI proof" things in STEM but that writing is different, we'll end up giving up on writing--and all the learning that goes with it. www.chronicle.com/article/harv...
In reality, no one is “trying to make AI simply go away,” if for no other reason than that no such thing is remotely possible. Students do not lack opportunities, incentives, and guidance in how to use AI. However many papers students are asked to write without AI, they will still have every opportunity to fire up the chat and explore its ability to alleviate the burdens of every cognitive activity imaginable. Here is what our students no longer have opportunities to do: read long, difficult texts; think; write on one topic for more than 50 minutes at a time.

I, too, have been experiencing a sense of alienation from my discipline. Not because I don’t believe that philosophy strives for truth and objectivity, but because believing that the sort of pseudo-reasoning LLMs engage in can achieve these epistemic goods requires having a bad epistemology.
Thread from Megan Fritts reading “For me, the biggest source of grief arising from the AI crisis hasn’t even been in the realm of teaching. It has been the realization that a non-trivial number of my disciplinary peers see philosophy in a way that is wholly different from—even antithetical to—the way I see it.”
