A screenshot of a paragraph in this story that reads.

"“Cyclists” are not a unique species of urban resident; they are simply people who decide to bike instead of using another mode. (In North America, that usually means driving.) People’s willingness to travel on two wheels largely depends upon infrastructure. Only the hardiest will cycle on fast-moving roads that lack protected bike lanes; slower streets and abundant cycle paths can entice many more people to ride. As bike advocates often note, estimating the demand for an unbuilt bike lane by counting the riders on dangerous roadways is like planning a bridge by estimating the people swimming across a river."

The last sentence is highlighted.

Waymo dooring sent a cyclist to hospital in SF, per Waymo's redacted NHTSA crash report. Note there were 2 Waymo robots involved, one stopped on each side of the bikelane. One doored the cyclist into the other robot. Not the first Waymo dooring, despite Waymo boasting about their anti-dooring tech.

2) Shared space between cars and pedestrians: With no clearly defined vertical separation or "travel lane", forced ambiguity between walking, cycling, and driving is critical to slowing drivers and cyclists down, and giving people on foot—especially kids—free reign to move (and linger) in the space.

So rarely does advertising match the truth. Not so with French late 19th century bike advertisements. They purely captured freedom in the way car advertising makes you want to believe today. These type of ads in 1880 were innovative + radical—imagine if we renewed that spirit in 2025.

#bikecommuting #wintercycling #winterbiking
Two bikes are locked to a bike rack. The ends of the bike rack are designed to look like penny-farthing bicycles. There is a bicycle repair station with tools and a pump at one end. The setting is a small college campus with a college building, a green, a fire hydrant, a street lamp, and some trees and shrubs behind the bike rack. There is some snow on the green and the concrete walkway has dried salt deposits due to evaporated water (secondary efflorescence), as well as some still wet patches.

If you drive in winter, the most pro-social thing you can do is just have patience. Slow down. Wait for pedestrians. Wait for cyclists. Park farther away and walk if you need to in order to keep bike lanes and bus stops and crosswalks clear. You’re in a mobile living room, you’ll be fine.

Early afternoon bike ride. I’ll definitely want some better tires for uncleared snow in the future. #biking #snowcycling
A bicycle with the front tire a couple inches deep in snow. The tire is mostly smooth, with only a bit of texture for grip, but it has no knobs or studs. The bike is orange and is on a pathway. An uncleared snowy path with footprints leading to a wooden overlook over a frozen pond within woods of primarily deciduous trees.

My evening bike commute through the park to work #biking #snowcycling #bikecommuting
A photo taken from the perspective of a bicyclist showing a plowed/packed snowy path with several inches of snow outside the plowed area. Surrounding the path is a wood of dozens of shed deciduous trees as well as some fallen trees and some smaller leafless plants. Partially visible in the bottom of the photo is the bicyclist’s front (hybrid) tire, all of the right brake lever and some of the left brake lever, and a light (off in the image); all components are black, though the tire has white snow and salt in its groves. The sky is a very light gray.

The Bicycle. Convenient form of transport or Vehicle of Lust & Iniquity? In the late 19th/early 20th century the bike became a shorthand for freedom, linked with ideas of women's liberation & the 'New Woman', & opening up romantic possibilities away from the prying eyes of family and neighbours ...
Early 20th century postcard captioned 'The New Woman. Have dinner ready at one o'clock, John!'. It includes a photograph of a woman in straw hat, blouse and bloomers about to wheel a bicycle out of the house. She is addressing her husband who has his shirtsleeves rolled up and is doing the laundry. Two young children are sitting on the floor, playing.Early 20th century postcard. It includes a picture of a man and woman photographed from behind. They are cuddling whilst each balanced on a bicycle. The caption reads 'Cycling just suits me'.
