Who needs planes, trains, and automobiles when you have boats, trains, and velomobiles (bikes)?

Yeah, at least the stopping at crosswalks is nice, I know that’s the law in England but I don’t know whether it is in the US or my state. But that’s at least what I try to do when I have to drive, since it seems unreasonable that cars should keep going indefinitely while peds wait indefinitely

I love it when drivers actually yield right of way correctly, like this. Although I do get a little peeved when they try to yield even when they have the right of way, like when I stop at a four way stop after them, or when they’re going straight and I’m turning left, since confusion is dangerous

It’s a perfect day to bike to work and call out House Republicans while doing so for passing a bill through the Natural Resources Committee — in literally the dead of night — to sell off public lands like the Arctic Refuge to the highest bidder. earthjustice.org/press/2025/e...

Hey, you can’t forget the gas tax! Assuming 2022 numbers (because that’s where I found avg mpg) for IL gas tax, that’s 2.9¢/mi, which at 0.01% would be 2.9E-6¢/mi for bikes. If you biked 14,263mi/yr, (avg for cars), that would be a whole extra 4.1¢/yr, totalling 5.6¢!!

I’ll definitely have to check this out sometime, I’d love to try out a cargo bike. Glad someone is doing this in Michigan

It’s nice that your rural roads there are only 25mph (not sure if people follow it though). Around where I live in Michigan a similar looking road would probably be 50mph.

Fun, although odd that there would be two different parsec measurements listed, since parsecs measure distance, not time

It’s so great how often there is bike parking squeezed as close as possible to the wall to minimize the number of people that can actually use it

would be a real shame if someone poured concrete down a few of those bollards so if someone were to ram them with their cars… not that i’m suggesting that… just that it would be a real shame…

A screenshot of a paragraph in this story that reads.

"“Cyclists” are not a unique species of urban resident; they are simply people who decide to bike instead of using another mode. (In North America, that usually means driving.) People’s willingness to travel on two wheels largely depends upon infrastructure. Only the hardiest will cycle on fast-moving roads that lack protected bike lanes; slower streets and abundant cycle paths can entice many more people to ride. As bike advocates often note, estimating the demand for an unbuilt bike lane by counting the riders on dangerous roadways is like planning a bridge by estimating the people swimming across a river."

The last sentence is highlighted.

Interesting, do they have better racks there? I have a fairly highly rated/high quality rack and it’s still only rated for ≤50lbs, so I’d be a bit worried having a 90lb kid on there, and worried about crashes, but I guess they could probably land on they’re feet more easily than on the saddle

Absolutely I think 100m is okay for a train/bus station, but I think for an ordinary bus stop (I have two within 40m of my front door) 15-20m is reasonable. My city’s bus depot only has no smoking in covered areas, as far as I can tell.

Aenet @aeneta.bsky.social · 01/04/2025
I guess I didn’t really realize how large 100m is. I think 15-20m could be reasonable though. And I mainly get annoyed by having to pass directly next to someone on the sidewalk while they are actively smoking.

this is not an april fools joke, i genuinely believe that smoking should be banned within 100 meters of The Building that houses a train/tram station, including any bike parking associated with it. infuriating to constantly try and fail to avoid cigarette smoke.

But I would wonder why these things would cause more women to choose not to cycle than men. Of course it benefits all to have better cycling infrastructure, but we should still consider the gender gap, which is much smaller in countries with better cycling infrastructure like NL

Me? Nothing, I wouldn’t turn onto the busway. But I know, at least where I live in MI, USA, that there would be a decent amount of people who would happily turn onto the busway if it meant a marginally shorter trip in their cars.

What do they do to prevent private vehicles from turning onto this road? Is it just signs and the law, and people follow it, or is there something else preventing/discouraging?

Aenet @aeneta.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
I agree, except I think sharing the road can be acceptable in certain very low traffic situations, like neighborhood streets, but those streets should be narrowed to reduce vehicle speeds further. Many people tell me I should “bike like a car”, but I can’t pedal my bike at 45mph, and cars won’t wait

How do you park your bike with your trailer? I’d prefer to do it in a way that doesn’t block the access of pedestrians too, but mainly just how do you secure it in addition to the bike itself? I’m interested in getting a trailer (or a cargo bike) but I don’t know how I’d secure them around me.

Anyone have suggestions for good cargo bikes for carrying a medium dog (50-60lbs) and/or a kid/cargo? (probably will carry the dog more often than the kid). Can be e- or analog. #bikes #cargobikes #ebikes #bikesuggestions #cycling
