A few odds and ends from this mornings foray into the forest. Had some fun "painting with light in the last 2 pictures as well as unintentional painting with the first. #Moss #Mushrooms #Fungi More pictures to follow...possibly tomorrow.
A fun 4 second exposure where I think I accidentally triggered the shot as I was packing up.A big leaf maple tree that's developed a hole in its trunk nearly large enough for a very small human to crawl through. The tree looks healthy for having a large hole in it. I love how much moss is covers these majestic trees! This mushroom held my attention for at least half an hour as I played around with different angles and exposures between a few seconds to 30 seconds while painting with the lights. This was a 2.5 second exposure.Another of the same fungi from image 3 but this time with less light "painting" for a 8 second exposure at f/36.

Chanterelles are popping!!! These tasty creatures were calling my name! Glad we have finally been getting some decent rainfall even if it isn't likely a trend with the insanely strong El Niño that's expected to continue to bring us drier conditions this fall. #EdibleFungi #Mushrooms #Macro
A chanterelle poking through the duff. The stipe barely extended below the lowest portion visible here.A closer look at a chanterelle couple poking through the forest floor. The specimen to the right was fully covered in the forest litter when I arrived. An animation including this picture as the after and another as the before can be seen below. Yay for rain!!! #SeptemberShowersBringFallMushies Cone mushrooms are among my favorites & Strobilurus trullisatus rarely disappoints! Typically spotted by the grouping of white capped mushrooms poking through the duff. Which make finding them like this so much fun! #Fungi #Nature #Moss #Macro
A Douglas fir pinecone covered in Strobilurus trullisatus mushrooms growing from it. These mushrooms have white caps and tan stems that gradually turn white as they approach the cap. The fir cone is also covered in moss that is nice and bright green due to the recent rains. A focus stack composite of 27 pictures taken with 2x LED lights.

I believe these are Strobilurus trullisatus growing on a Douglas fir cone. #Fungi #Cone #Moss #TinyMushrooms The trail was littered with groupings of these tiny little mushrooms usually with the cone fully buried with only a cluster of tiny white mushrooms poking through the moss.
A grouping of 7 fruting bodies with a tan color cap that appears to darken toward the tip. They are all seen emerging from a single cone and appear in varying stages of growth with a few newly emerging ones and a few older ones with their caps folding indicating they are drying out. A single shot with longer exposure time of 1/13 sec and f/11. The closest mushroom is a little more out of focus that I was hoping but I didn't have my tripod with me and this was the best I could get with what I was working with at the angle I wanted.

This likely Wood-woolly foot mushroom's desiccation aptly represents the thirst our forests in the PNW still feel. The recent rainfall has been much appreciated but nowhere near what we need. #Mushroom #Moss #SwordFern #Fungi Not many other fungi are popping recently but I'll post a few.
A likely Wood Woolly-Foot, Collybiopsis peronata, mushroom with the edges of the cap showing signs of drying out. The stem of the mushroom is a creamy white color with "whooly" texture especially visible on the lower right side of the stem. The cap is a tan coloration and is dramatically lit to show off the folds of the mushroom as they increase as it drys out. We had a few rounds of rainfall over the past few weeks but the ground is still super thirsty. Still lots of these cute, even if apparently invasive, mushrooms popping up along the trail. Along with gilled mushrooms living on Douglas fir cones, Strobilurus trullisatus these dominated the forest floor with not many other mushrooms spotted as of late. This picture was a long-ish exposure of 1 second with a f/29 so the entire mushroom and most of the fern are both in focus in the single shot. I used one LED light for dramatic lighting.

Found within arms reach of the just posted bolete mushroom was this Northern red-legged frog (Rana aurora) on the same log as a large grouping of what I believe to be Common Coral Slime (Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa). #Herp #Frog #SlimeMold #Moss #MacroPhotography #Nature #Fungi
A large group of coral slime mold growing from a moss covered log. Their stark white fingers stand out among the dominant dark brown and green forest. This grouping was just 1.5ft to the left of the frog in the other picture here growing on the same log.A Northern red-legged frog perched atop a log keeping careful watch over a human that suddenly emerged from the forest and started obsessing over a large bolete mushroom found nearby. I imagine them going..."Did he see me? I hope not, there's a mushroom and some slime mold nearby that will hopefully keep his attention from me. Just don't blink...Be the moss..."
A bulbous form of the red belted conch is seen below the frog who stayed there the entire time I was taking pictures of it and the nearby bolete mushroom and coral slime mold.
This picture is a focus stacked composite of 27 pictures with supplemental lighting...as you can see reflected in the frog's eyes.

Check out this handsome bolete. Bonus flying insect on the sponge. #Mushroom #Fungi #Nature #MacroPhotography #Insect
A bolete with a creamy yellow sponge that appears largely intact but I'm confident would be riddled with the insects (in maggot form) this fungi plays an important host to. The stipe has evidence of likely consumption by slug with the otherwise undisturbed portions taking on a light brown coloration I'm curious about possibly being the color of the spores vs a natural color transition. With the healed up slug bites I'd wager this mushroom has been hanging out in the forest for awhile before we stumbled upon them. A focus stacked image comprised of 25 pictures with supplemental lighting. A red legged frog and some coral slime mold were found within arms reach of this mushroom.

This #CandyCorn looking #Mushroom is Chicken of the Woods, coincidentally named after a creature known to be a bit of a corn connoisseur. I was happy to find these new growths have returned a 3rd year in a row, if not a bit delayed due to drought. See below for more pics/video. #Fungi #Lichen🍄📷
A freshly emerged mushroom with yellow tip that transitions to a bright orange with coloration reminiscent of candy corn sans the white tip. Lime green lichen surround the emergence site for these fruiting bodies with several specimens apparently having been incorporated into the mushroom as it emerged. I finally got around to harvesting and prepping the first round of #Salal berries from the bushes I've been tending in my yard. My go to has been a lemon vanilla salal muffin but this year I incorporated a little matcha powder. The lemon zest will probably overpower it but I love the color. #Nature
The Salal berry bunches after harvest. I left plenty for the birds. The bushes I've been feeding compost and routinely watering are absurd compared to the ones I see in the "wild" that are usually heavily browsed by humans harvesting for floral arrangements. The end result was just over 4 cups of berries, just shy of a liter. Not bad for the first harvest. About 10% of the berries on my main cluster of bushes, although most of what is left is still green which means I'll have several more rounds to go through the fall! I used half of this for the muffins this morning and have the rest in the chest freezer to test how well they freeze. Immediately after incorporating the berries into the muffin batter. All set in the silicon muffin pans. They're gonna be ugly little buggers, but if the batter is any indication they should be delicious.

I found this bottle taken over by moss abandoned in the woods this winter and thought it would fit with the theme of #Glass for this weekend's #BlueskyArtShow #Photography #Moss I backlit it with one of my lights to give it an ethereal look.
This is one where I wish I had my DSLR with me at the time. I would have tried to get a little more of the mossy bed in focus but still a fun shot looking into the mossy interior of the bottle. Backlit with a small LED light. The side view of a bottle likely from the 50s or 60s with moss growing inside of it on a bed of moss. What a difference 18 days makes! #Fungi #ReturnToTheSceneOfTheCrime #Growth #ShroomScrolling #DappledSunshine
A cluster of mushrooms emerge from a decaying fir stump. Their caps are a velvety brown with creamy gills and that travel down the stem before more velvet dominates. Scene here with some dramatic lighting thanks to the evergreen huckleberry that was providing a little shade from the the sun. A slightly different angle with a better placed supplemental lighting to highlight the gills. The dappling sunshine on the stump and mushroom makes for some dramatic lighting that I dig more than a perfectly lit subject.

Most of the ghost pipe flowers are now fully erect facing up. Only the one straggler on the right is still facing away perpendicular to the ground. With the decent amount of rain we received Thursday I had hoped for some interesting finds this weekend & this did not disappoint. #Nature #FungiFriends This fluffy white fungus stood out as a bright beacon in the duff as it invaded an old amanita mushroom. #Fungi Closer shots w/ #Insects & more ⬇️
An old amanita mushroom can't escape their fate as they become enveloped in the mechanicians of another fungi that is taking advantage of the mushroom's structure and recent rainfall. The fluffy white nature of this invading fungi reminiscent of a sort of forbidden candy floss. The mushroom had a brown coloration with cream colored universal veil remnants flecking their cap. The other fungi advancing not only covers 70% of the mushroom but also a good 1-2 inches (2.5-5cm) of the surrounding forest floor.

I was stoked to try my first #Thimbleberry of the year, but was surprised this insect refused to move, even when super close. It took me longer than I'd care to admit before I finally realized it was a shedded insect exoskeleton. I think this is the #Exuvia of a #Leafhopper. #Berry #Insect #AltText
A cluster of thumbleberries, (Rubus parviflorus) the center dark red one is fully ripe while the 2x lighter red ones still need some time to mature. Another 2 heads look to have failed to have turned to fruit. The berry was still tasty after carefully removing the exuvia.A closer view of the translucent insect shed with the head facing down and to the right and the thorax to the upper left. Two clusters of velvet Roll-rim fungi spring out of what I believe to be a Douglas for stump. The name said it all. These mostly brown fungi have a velvety brown top with a light brown stipe. The last of the photos from the Ghost pipe spotted this weekend. (Monotropa uniflora) #BloomScrolling #Fungi #Myco-heterotroph #FungiFriends Four more shots of this bouquet can me seen in the comments. #AltText
A bouquet of Ghost Pipe flowers spring out of the forest floor that is covered in a mix of fir cones, needles, leaves and bright green tendrils of moss. As indicated by their scientific species name, Monotropa uniflora, they have one flower per stem. Their stem and the majority of their flower parts are all a stark white with faint hints of pink. They are3 very delicate and bruise easily which shows up in as black accenting the flower and bits of stem that have been rubbed the wrong way. My understanding is each of these is their own individual plant and they are just growing in a sort of cluster that bouquet seemed to fit. They don't have any chlorophyl and have to rely on tapping into the fungal network for their food.

More of my favorite #Myco-heterotroph, the Ghost pipe! (Monotropa uniflora) #BloomScrolling #Fungi #FungiFriends This one with a Chanterelle mushroom posed perfectly in front of it with a leafy salal sprig providing separation.
A lone chanterelle of a creamy yellow coloration springs forth from the duff being slightly contorted by the Douglas fir cone it sprung frum under that was held fast by the moss that covers the forest floor. A sprig of salal extends across the from from the left separating this mushroom from the fungi infesting gorgeous ghost plant cluster in the background. The ghost pipe have a faint pink hue to their otherwise stark white stalk and flower parts with accents of black bruises. This is a composite shot of 29 images focus stacked. Ghost Pipe are blooming! #BloomScrolling (Monotropa uniflora) These are my favorite of all the local non-photosynthesizing plants with their delicate faintly pink to stark-white stalks that bruise in gorgeous black accents seemingly designed for a noir film. #Myco-heterotroph #Fungi #FungiFriends
5 fully mature plants stand tall over their stunted friend. Based on the bruising I'd water the larger plants have been exposed for a while longer than their diminutive friend that looks to have already flowered. The plants and flowers are white with a faint pink hue to them. They bruise very easily and that bruising turns a very contrasty black that gives them a sort of painted look. A composite of 9 pictures were focus stacked for this image. There was a bright red mite crawling about them the entire time but I unfortunately missed it in this shot.

I found a trio of these in the local forest, Banner Heritage Park in Port Orchard. I was super excited to find these as I didn't even know they existed. I initially wondered if they were an odd looking Woodland Pinedrop (Pterospora andromedea) that I've come across a couple of times in recent years as they have almost pumpkin looking fruiting bodies I could have seen these becoming but I was super excited to find out they were an entirely new species of Non-photosynthesizing plant I wasn't even aware of. The flowering stalk extended about 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) above the forest floor. Another stalk was found about an arms length away from this one. These gorgeous flower have an very phallic looking Pistil that drops down and has a sort of mushroom head looking tip that appears to have moisture and or nectar surrounding it.The other plant found nearby. I couldn't get over the colors of these. The Bright orange/yellow anther at the tip of the white filament. The phallic pistil that drops down and the ink dappled with shite petals that protect these from the elements. A light green sepal is present and possibly has chlorophyll here? A few odds and ends from Friday's trip to McCormick Forest Park in Gig Harbor Washington State. #Fungi #Orchid #BloomScrolling #MacroPhotography Picture 2 is often seen at this park having been infected by the Hypomyces lactifluorum fungi, resulting in lobster mushrooms.
A Bolete, possibly of the Zeller's variety. A Russula, possibly a Russula brevipes, sprouting forth from the forest floor. I believe someone already removed the litter from the top of this one prior to my coming across it. These large white fungi are quite common at this park and are often seen in their lobster mushroom form when infected by the also common here Hypomyces lactifluorum.A spotted coralroot orchid I believe to be the Corallorhiza maculata var. ozettensis. A fly can be seen hanging out on one of the lower flowers. A Russula fungi with its cap nearly fully eaten away. The lone Bolete found along the trail. I was fortunate enough to get a mostly in focus shot of the fly before it buzzed off. A focus stacked composite of only 4 images went into this picture. I was even more fortunate to have captured the fly because the exposure time here was 1/2 sec, so glad they decided to stand still for that time. The mushroom has an interesting latticework on its stipe that is an ochre coloration. The creamy yellow pores look pristine although if that fly deposited some eggs I wouldn't expect it to remain so for too much longer although. The cap is a slightly darker yellow color.

One of the many desiccated Amanitas found along the trail that got fully zapped by last weeks heat wave. I love how their gills get all squiggly when they dry up. This is a focus stacked composite of 11 images, supplementally lit with 2x LED lights.

A trio of Amanita at varying stages are enjoying a sunny day in their mossy habitat. The one on the left has curled up to form a sort of bowl. The intermediate stage one to the right has a bright glare from the sunlight on their creamy-yellow cap spotted with oatmeal looking remnants of the universal veil. A 3rd less mature one has just burst forth through the moss right behind the 2nd. A composite of 22 images were focus stacked here. The left mushroom was supplementally lit with 2x LED lights to better show its stipe.

A pair of Amanita fungi with vastly different heights with the smaller about 1/5th of the size of the larger and yet it is still going to spore likely due to the lack of moisture limiting it's growth. Both caps are a creamy-yellow with oatmeal looking cream colored remnants of the universal veil present on both caps although the larger is more concentrated on the upper 2/3 of the cap. This image is a Focus Stacked composite of 37 images lit with 2x LED lights at 5K.

An image of an unidentified Amanita stands tall in the forest although it is showing signs of desiccation due to the excessive heat and dearth of rainfall we've had this past week. The mushroom has a yellow head with remnants of the universal veil that look like oatmeal spotted all along the cap. The stipe is a creamy white and fairly girthy, as is typical with Amanita.

A party of Stellar's Jays banded together to cast astray an invading Barred Owl that had apparently done them dirty. They followed this Owl around for a good 20 minutes dive-bombing them in vain. A composite of 3 videos observing the Jays attacking the owl. #Jays #Owl #Birds #Nature

A couple more Gnome Plant sightings! One of my favorite spots at Banner Forest Heritage Park is absolutely rife with these adorable little parasites! #Myco-heterotroph #Fungi #BloomScrolling #Flowers
A pair of gnome plants emerges from the moss covered forest floor. The white scaley what I assume are leaves really stand out in contract to the dark green and brown of the forest floor. Note the only thing with significant coloration is the yellow Stigma. When the petals/leaves are damaged they do turn a darker coloration but otherwise these, at least at this state, tend to remain an off whit with light shades of pink.

Peek-a-boo! While picking some Red Huckleberries in my back yard, this jumping spider made the leap to my hand. I gently replaced them on one of the stems and proceeded to watch them explore the new stem. Such curious creatures, they kept a close eye on me. #Spider #Huckeberry #Peek-a-boo
A jumping spider that had a rather large abdomin is seen peeking over one of the leaves of the red huckleberry bush I placed them back onto after finding them on my hand after picking a few of the deliciously tart berries. They are reminiscent of a nice granny smith apple.

I was super stoked to find my first Sugarstick today! (Allotropa virgata) #BloomScrolling These #Non-Photosynthesizing plants are associated with the choice edible fungi Matsutake.(Tricholoma murrillianum) I'll post a few more pictures in the comments as I process them. #Fungi #Flowers 🍄📷
A pair of Sugarstick plants have sprung forth from the forest floor where their host fungus, the Western Matsutake mushroom makes connections with the surrounding trees and supplies some of the nutrients they receive to this non-photosynthesizing plant. This image is a focus stacked composite of 15 images. A closeup of the left Sugarstick plant. The plant appears to be white overall with red streaks running up and down the stem. Lower down along the stem are white leaflets with many flowers growing from the top portion of the stem. The flowers themselves have dark red stigma with the Stamen a lighter red closer to the red along the stem. The petals are all stark white. This is a focus stacked composite of 38 images.

A few observations from yesterday's lunchtime walk. The Pacific Banana Slugs were out in force! #Forest #Slugs #Trillium #DogSky
Winston happily trekking into the forest. This Pacific Banana Slug was spotlighted by a hole in the canopy of the cedar dominant forest they were found hanging out in. Another Pacific Banana Slug napping close to the other in the same forest. One of the few trillium that looks to have successfully gone to seed. For one reason or another the flower heads on these don't seem to stay attached...
