How do people make decisions in complex conjoint experiments of policy choices? When decomposing individual responses into different strategies, most people use a heuristic strategy. Personally, I was surprised how many people are using the rational strategy! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Very nice pep talk from @vm-wylbur.bsky.social
And that's kind of my hope for this podcast, is to say, "Why do we let big companies be the people who define what technology is and what it's for?" It's not. It's ours. We're human beings. We make tools. It's what we do. Tool making is one of the sort of fundamental things that makes us people. I'm not going to let some big company say that they're making tools and I'm just a consumer of those tools. No, to hell with them. I'm going to build the tools.

So that's the other piece of it is to give some sense that this is not just possible... It's not even that hard. This stuff's all out there, I'm just plugging it together. I'm writing a ton of software, but when I say writing software, I'm gluing together all this other stuff that all these other people have written. That's what the free software movement does is it puts these pieces out there and then we can tie them all together for other purposes. And so I think that's the reason that we want to go public.

a new paper forthcoming in Social Forces! focusing on the killing of George Floyd & the BLM, I study the formation of generations, proposing that formative events can create within-cohort differentiation as much as between-cohort differentiation. read here: tkeskinturk.github.io/imprinting.pdf
Generational Imprinting: How Political Events Shape Cohorts
Contemporary narratives of generational politics propose that formative experiences produce shared political opinions across an age cohort. In this article, I advance a theory of cohortization to challenge that view, arguing that large-scale political events produce differentiation within cohorts as much as differentiation between them. I investigate the implications of this framework through the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, analyzing attitudes toward law enforcement among non-Hispanic White Americans from 2016 to 2024. Using survey data from Cooperative Congressional Election Study, American National Election Study, and the Nationscape, I show that younger and older cohorts diverged after the event, but this differentiation was driven exclusively by young Democrats and Independents. The end result was not a unified generation, but one internally divided along party lines. This finding qualifies theories of generational politics, emphasizing that formative experiences may intensify existing political divisions within cohorts.

I will laminate 100 of these and toss them at people's faces in the next ASA Sociology of Law Section meeting.
"I am not starry-eyed about this at all. This has not been a star-struck book. I am insisting only upon the obvious point, which some modem Marxists have overlooked, that there is a difference between arbitrary power and the rule of law. We ought to expose the shams and inequities which may be concealed beneath this law. But the rule of law itself the imposing of. effective inhibitions upon power and the defence of the citizen from power's all-intrusive claims, seems to me to be an unqualified human good. To deny or belittle this good is, in this dangerous century when the resources and pretensions of power continue to enlarge, a desperate error of intellectual abstraction. More than this, it is a self-fulfilling error, which encourages us to give up the struggle against bad laws and class-bound procedures, and to disarm ourselves before power. It is to throw away a whole inheritance of struggle about law, and within the forms of law, whose continuity can never be fractured without bringing men and women into immediate danger."

a new job market paper! using surveys from 10.4 million college students over 40 years, I study the role of ideology in career aspirations. I show that ideology structures what careers people want, a pattern much stronger among high-income students. see here: tkeskinturk.github.io/aspirations.pdf
Ideology as a Luxury Good in Occupational Choice
Turgut Keskintürk
Duke University

Abstract
Career aspirations are formed long before people enter the labor market, but whether and how political ideology is part of that formative process remains poorly understood. Using yearly surveys of 10.4 million college freshmen entering U.S. institutions between 1976 and 2015, I show that ideology systematically structures occupational aspirations. This pattern is two to three times larger among students from the highest socioeconomic backgrounds than among those from the lowest. To explain this difference, I propose a luxury-good interpretation: political congruence, the match between one's politics and an occupation's perceived ideological orientation, constitutes an occupational amenity whose importance increases with material security. This, I theorize, makes ideology an expressive resource for life choices, though one that is unequally distributed.
