“At first glance Leo Breiman’s stimulating paper looks like an argument against parsimony and scientific insight, and in favor of black boxes with lots of knobs to twiddle. At second glance it still looks that way…”

In social sciences "positivism" is more or less just a by-word for "bad and regressive", but I dunno if you look at the political fights of their day the actual logical positivists were largely on the side of light. 🤷‍♂️

How do people make decisions in complex conjoint experiments of policy choices? When decomposing individual responses into different strategies, most people use a heuristic strategy. Personally, I was surprised how many people are using the rational strategy! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

True. Btw, Weber remains undefeated here.
"The theoretical concepts of sociology are ideal types not only from the objective point of view, but also in their application to subjective processes. In the great majority of cases actual action goes on in a state of inarticulate half-consciousness or actual unconsciousness of its subjective meaning. The actor is more likely to "be aware" of it in a vague sense than he is to "know" what he is doing or be explicitly self-conscious about it. In most cases his action is governed by impulse or habit."
