Building a distributed, privacy-preserving way of doing this - stewarded by an internal team, not defaulting to single massive suppliers - would be hard but not impossible and super interesting. It would be amazing if Burnham could invest a bit of bravery in this.

I suspect the problem here is a strategic one not a technology one, and that (bear with me) Burnham doesn't want to *replace* Palantir but find a different way to solve the same problems giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

This does indeed smell desperate, but that's not why I'm sharing it. No, the bit that leapt out to me was the @financialtimes.com use of the phrase "Seattle-based cloud giant" to describe Amazon, which sounds beautifully fairytale and captures the nature of this whole industry: magic beans.

Newport Folk Festival, Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI, 8-2-2008 - The Cowboy Junkies
Here's another album from the 2008 Newport Folk Festival. This time, it's a set by the Cowboy Junkies. As I said in my previous write-up, I'm going to try to keep these write-ups short for the festival. But since I haven't posted anything from this band before, here's their Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_Junkies I have to say I'd thought this band was a one-trick pony, playing all their songs in a slow, sleepy style. But I was pleasantly surprised that there was a good amount of musical variety here, and even some rocking at times. This album is 53 minutes long. 01 Miles from Our Home (Cowboy Junkies) 02 I Don't Get It (Cowboy Junkies) 03 talk (Cowboy Junkies) 04 Follower 2 (Cowboy Junkies) 05 My Little Basquait (Cowboy Junkies) 06 Those Final Feet (Cowboy Junkies) 07 Just Want to See (Cowboy Junkies) 08 Working on a Building (Cowboy Junkies) 09 Good Friday (Cowboy Junkies) 10 talk (Cowboy Junkies) 11 Murder Tonight in the Trailer Park (Cowboy Junkies) https://pixeldrain.com/u/ZhpULCm2 alternate: https://bestfile.io/en/ex58qcldyrBjXdA/file The cover photo of the band's lead singer Margo Timmins is from this exact concert.

If you get the chance to see Juliet and Romeo, grab it. The star-crossed lovers are in their 40s, tired and out of love. They re-stage the events of Shakespeare’s play (distorted they say) to find out where it all went wrong. Starts off funny, ends up heartbreaking.

Day 20 #SciArtSeptember prompt is meander so I am sharing geologist & paleontogist Alice Wilson (1881-1964) with the Ottawa River. 🧪👩🏼‍🔬⚒️ #histsci A job in the Mineralogy Division of the U of Toronto Museum was her entry into #geology. In 1909 as a museum assistant with Geological Survey of Canada
Linocut portrait of a young Alice Wilson with her hands under her chin printed in gold ink. Behind her is her own geological map of the Ottawa Valley with the different features on collaged translucent Japanese papers in raspberry, purple, yellow, pale blue, and beige in inks of similar but darker hues. “OTTAWA RIVER” is marked but the final R is obscured by her head.

I'm not going to share a link to give it clicks, but the Guardian's interview with Jacob Rees-Mogg is a sick inducing attempt to rehabilitate the former MP. But, hidden in there are some shockingly outdated views on abortion and same sex marriage.
Text of interview with Jacob Rees-Mogg.
One of his most controversial positions is on abortion, which he has called “morally indefensible”. His opposition to it even applies for pregnancies as a result of rape or incest. “I accept the teaching of the church,” he says. “At the point of which life begins, and the question is whether it’s right to take life, and it’s the importance of the second life. There are two lives, not one to be considered.” He is also vehemently opposed to gay marriage. When asked about it previously, he said: “I take the teaching of the Catholic church seriously. Marriage is a sacrament and the view of what marriage is is taken by the church, not parliament.” Another Roman Catholic view is that sex should wait until after marriage. Can I ask a personal question, I say? “You can ask any question – I may not answer it!’
