**_Talking Heads - State Theatre, Sydney, Australia,_****_June 8_**** _/_****_June 9_**** _, 1979_**
This ain’t no foolin’ around! There’s a _Fear of Music_ deluxe set on the way in the upcoming months — and if it’s as good as the previous deluxe Talking Heads sets of recent years, it’ll be well worth owning. While we wait, let’s dig into a pair of sweet Sydney SBDs from the band’s first tour down under, during which they debuted several _FoM_ tunes. I guess they were kind of opening way, way off-Broadway.
David, Tina, Chris and Jerry had taken a little time off the road in the first half of ‘79 to write and record _Fear of Music_. Accordingly, they sound well-rested and ready to go on these crystal clear tapes, whether playing the older stuff (great versions of “Warning Sign,” “Found a Job,” “New Feeling” etc) or jamming the new material, including “Electric Guitar,” “Heaven” and “Memories Can’t Wait.”
One crucial new song Talking Heads don’t play is “I Zimbra” — with its wild polyrhythms, that one would have to wait for the “big band” era in 1980 and beyond. But check out the opening riffage of “Psycho Killer” on June 8 … they seem to be considering breaking into _Fear of Music_ ’s classic kick-off.
