It takes a brave ladybird to seek cover amongst the hostile-looking hairs of Bristly Oxtongue (Helminthotheca echioides) but in mid-October who could resist the shelter of a sunshine yellow canopy? #wildflowerhour @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Bristly leaves and stem. Described in my wildflower book as a mix of ‘hairs with tips like miniature grappling hooks’ and ‘scattered, larger, thorn-like bristles’ (Harrap, 2013).Two bright yellow flower heads.A single yellow flower head viewed from the side, revealing a ladybird sheltering at its base, enclosed in the space within an outer row of widened bracts.

Less showy than most of the other weeds, but a bit special because I see it so rarely. Sticky Groundsel with its distinctive curled outer petals that look a bit half-hearted compares to the 3 species of ragwort that grow nearby. #WildflowerHour
A single yellow flower. The centre is a tuft of tiny yellow flowers, like groundsel or the centre of a daisy. The outer petals are quite sparse and curl backwards.
