A Spiked Shieldbug at Runnymede. Fun facts according to my new Pocket Guide to Shieldbugs: it's the only shieldbug to overwinter as an egg and is so named because of the thorn-like shoulders on the pronotum. (Casually dropping in words like pronotum to give impression I know what I'm talking about.)

A classic #WildWebsWednesday at this time of year - an Ivy Bee foraging on an Ivy flower in the pub car park in Kenley where we had lunch yesterday. This was after a very interesting tour of the airfield led by volunteers from the Kenley Revival Project.

A Small Copper with interesting colour variation on the upper side of the forewings, nectaring on Common Ragwort near Bough Beech yesterday. Apparently abberation is fairly frequent in this species, and I am presuming it is an abberation rather than just being faded. #WildWebsWednesday

I was out most of yesterday, and missed #WildflowerHour, so am posting my finds for last week a bit late. It was practically all gone to seed, but I was pleased to see the odd flowering plant of Nottingham Catchfly, Silene nutans, at Dungeness last Monday.

My #FavouritePlant this year was the Harebells at South Gare on the River Tees Estuary in mid-July during the drought, because they were the sort of spectacular display of abundance and diversity that people go abroad for and we had it here in the Tees Valley #WildflowerHour

A #FavouritePlant this year is one I saw only a couple of days ago, Pennyroyal, Mentha pulegium. I've been wanting to see it for ages, and so I was excited to see it on the edge of Ardingly Reservoir. As far as I can gather, it was introduced in 1979 when the reservoir was created. #WildflowerHour.

I've just submitted the manuscript for my next book, THE GHOSTS OF CHALK COUNTRY. It's about the loss of England's chalk downland - a tale of flowers, fertility, fascism and freedom. Published by William Collins on 22nd April 2027; pre-order here: uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
Photo shows the printed manuscript for my book, The Ghosts of Chalk Country, by Guy Shrubsole. Background shows a cork board covered in old postcards, photos and paintings of chalk landscapes, including some Eric Ravilious watercolours, and a postcard of the Cerne Giant wearing underpants.
