My #favouriteplant has to be this Deadly Nightshade. Memorable because a) it was the first time I'd seen it locally and b) it was the evening of the partial solar eclipse. I spotted it as we walked up through woodland on the north side of the South Downs, south of East Chiltington #wildflowerhour

Deadly Nightshade. The first part of the common name is self-explanatory; the second comes from the Old English word 'nihtscada'. It might refer to dark berries, the fact that the plant grows in shady places, or its poisonous properties, long linked to darkness and evil. #wildflowerhour #CommonNames

Last week I posted images of what I thought were Common and Lesser Centaury. I went back this week to double-check and am sure that the smaller plant is Lesser Centaury. Note the stalk on the tiny, deep pink, flowers (first 2 images). Woodland ride on the South Downs #wildflowerhour

#StillFlowering on the South Downs. Chalk grassland is renowned for its floristic richness and most species have withstood the hot dry conditions. Common Knapweed, Small Scabious, Round-headed Rampion, Birds-foot Trefoil, Lady's Bedstraw amongst others #wildflowerhour

I didn't have a hand lens or any books with me, so couldn't check the diagnostic characters, but I think these might be Common and Lesser Centaury, growing within a metre of each other, on a woodland ride on the South Downs between Lewes and Plumpton #WildflowerHour

This area used to be regularly mowed at Causeway hospital @NHSCTrust A decision was taken to just mow a path & leave the rest to grow, & what a great decision that was. No planting/sowing required, just halt the mowing to see what treasures will grow! #wildflowerhour
