Truly bizarre experience twitching a Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) feeding on the edge of the woodland whilst visiting Sheffield General Cemetery today. Has anyone seen them hunting in similar habitat? Left it ‘showing well’ at 1130 hrs. SK34248600 @shefbirdstudy.bsky.social #UKBirding

Another successful ringing day at the Bill: 131 new birds incl migrant totals of 19 Sedge W, 17 WW & 4 Sand Martin; also another 3 Storm Petrels overnight. News back on one of our 'control' Storm Petrels from two nights ago - it had first been ringed just the night before on the Isles of Scilly!
Although departing Sand Martins have been passing through for at least a month today was the first day that any had lingered to permit a few to be trappedThe vast majority of autumn Sand Martins trapped here are youngsters that are easily recognised by their fresh plumage, with buff scaling very prominent on particularly the scapulars, tertials and upper tail covertsVery few adult Sand Martins are trapped but those that are are easy to spot by their duller, worn plumage that lacks any conspicuous scaling
