Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Made the trip over to the rival London reservoirs today (Staines Res). What a superb wader fest it was. At least KGV Res has 2,500 more tufted duck and 1,000 more coot! #BirdingLondon 0160
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 08/09/2026After yesterday’s county first, I didn’t think it could get much better moth wise… until I turned over the final soggy egg box. Dorset Cream Wave! Wandering from the likely breeding East London population or a primary immigrant? #TeamMoth 0220
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Lit up the traps in my urban London garden for the first time in a few weeks. A wandering Heath Rustic was a surprise among other more expected migrants. Looks to be a county first #TeamMoth 1270
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 05/09/2026British-born juvenile Montagu’s Harrier at Wallasea Island this morning (likely ring code HH). Absolute peach of a bird that glowed in the morning sun as it quartered over scrapes holding Red-necked Phalarope, Curlew Sands and Little Stints! #RareBirdsUK 1442
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 17/08/2026A day to remember on patch at KGV. I had missed some waders mid-morning so headed up in the midday sun to see if anything was still moving. Sure enough 8 Blackwit flew through. Then, while scanning high flying gulls I was shocked to see two of them weren’t gulls at all, Arctic Skuas! #BirdingLondon 1553
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 15/08/2026A distinctive autumny feel at KGV this morning, with birds on the move. Two Black-necked Grebes were fresh in, along with a Mediterranean Gull, 2 Redshank, 4 Wigeon, a Wheatear, 11 Yellow Wagtails and a trio of Goosanders. 070
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 14/08/2026An amazing night field trapping in North Hertfordshire last night. Staggering number of moths. The most unbelievable of the lot were c.150 Delicates! Backed up by 15! Ancylosis oblitella and 500+ Small Mottled Willow. Crazy year #TeamMoth 6381
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 13/08/2026The record Knot-horn year continues in the garden with Ancylosis oblitella. Had been expecting this species for a while given its recent dispersal so pleased to finally get one #TeamMoth 0190
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Half the numbers in the moth trap following a clear and chilly night, but a completely new species assemblage as a result. A smart Delicate was new for the year and joined the growing number of migrants on the garden year list. #TeamMoth 0290
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 10/08/2026Amazingly, last night produced the highest garden species count of the year (92sp) with the trap absolutely full of migrants. The highlight was a pristine Bordered Straw double, while a tatty P. vitrealis and a box fresh A. tumidana were the other notable species. #TeamMoth 0180
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Colder overnight temperatures mean mothing takes a break and birding comes back into my life. A pleasant evening on patch was highlighted in the form of a patch year tick with this lovely and approachable Black-tailed Godwit #Londonbirding 060
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 05/08/2026Moth numbers are slowly fading away but still a few additions each night. Two new striking Knot-horns were new with this smart Elegia similella and a Delplanqueia agg. #teammoth 0140
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 02/08/2026You see moths shaped like broken twigs, fallen leaves, and bird droppings but this is the first I’ve seen that’s camofladged to patio paving slabs! Had to do a double take for this Coleophora hemerobiella as it blended in perfectly but glad I did for the nfg #TeamMoth 0200
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 31/07/2026A surprising number of good moths in the trap last night (171/56) with personal highlight of the gorgeous Cosmopterix pulchrimella. Vitula biviella, Blastobasis rebeli, Vestel and continuing numbers of SMW and C. amaplana the best of the rest #TeamMoth 0190
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 18/07/2026A few nights off and numbers well down due to chilly nights but still some goodies arriving. Another (!) Light Crimson Underwing was surpassed by this very fresh Cydia amplana #TeamMoth 0230
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 10/07/2026Christened a brand new trap last night and was not disappointed. The first moth seen in it in the morning was a nfg Acrobasis tumidana. A number of stunning Dewick’s Plusia were also hiding in the egg boxes and nfg #TeamMoth 1280
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 08/07/2026More Catocala action in the trap with both Dark Crimson and Light Crimson together! Very rare to have the chance to see these two species side by side, never realised how much larger Dark Crimsons were. The AirBnB I am staying in for work is certainly getting a good rating #TeamMoth 0230
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 07/07/2026One of my target species of my trip to Kent was Bright Wave. I was a little late in its flight period but still managed to see a good number, both by daytime netting and to light. A lovely species in a really nice mosaic habitat #TeamMoth 0260
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 07/07/2026Saturday night was immense with the traps holding 250+ species with an array of Kent specialities, recent colonists, migrants and a moths of all colours, shapes and sizes. But in all that diversity there could only be one highlight - The Goat! #TeamMoth 1532
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Home after a weekend in Kent and met with rather mothless egg boxes. Then a flash of red at the bottom of the trap and panic ensued. I rushed the trap into the flat, me with a pot and my girlfriend armed with a net. The LCU evaded both of us but was soon potted in the living room. Stunner! #TeamMoth 0522
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Down in south Kent coast for a weekends mothing. Some great moths so far with a box fresh Sussex Emerald the highlight and Catoptria verellus, Digitivalva pulicariae, Several Langmaids, Orthotelia sparganella, Lamoria zelleri, Pempelia genistella other moths of interest #TeamMoth 0421
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Wrapped the Norfolk weekend trip by looking for speciality moths in the Brecks. No sign of any BB Bee Hawk-moths but the Vipers Bugloss was absolutely covered in Hummingbird Hawk-moths #TeamMoth 1301
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Another great trap, albeit with dwindling numbers. The undoubted highlight was one of my favourite moths, Stathmopoda pedella - such a brilliantly shaped little thing! #TeamMoth 0240
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 27/06/2026A superb night in the Broads with 157 species in the field and 131 species in the garden traps. Some nice specialities including Pseudopostega auritella, Acleris lorquiniana, and Reed Leopard #TeamMoth 1220
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Just 38 species in the trap this morning well down on the 75-85 species recorded last week. Heat too much for the moths to deal with in the concrete jungle? One nfg Cydia interscindana #TeamMoth 3370
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 24/06/2026A rather disappointing catch last night, with surprisingly empty traps despite the conditions. Any disappointment quickly vanished when a Catoptria pinella emerged glowing from the egg boxes. Such a stunning species, and undoubtedly one of my all time favourite moths. #TeamMoth 2373
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 23/06/2026Braved the storms with just one trap last night and was rewarded with a NFG Langmaid’s Yellow Underwing and plenty of Silver Ys here in London. With Thor apparently taking the night off, fingers crossed for an even better catch tonight. #TeamMoth 0220
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 21/06/2026A night in Dorset was poorly timed with a rather chilly evening compared to those either side. Still trapped 331/101 including a lifer in the form of Celypha aurofasciana. A few migrants sprinkled in but nothing exceptional, shame to head back to London just as Dorset enters its hot spell #teammoth 0133
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 20/06/2026The highest count of recent days with 182/85 and even some signs of migration in the form of Small Mottled Willows and Rusty-dot Pearl. Several Rhyacionia buoliana were a nice addition to the garden list. #TeamMoth 1231
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 19/06/2026Another good trap with 158/71 although very few nfy last night. The highlight was my second Small Marbled of the year which was in slightly better condition than the previous one! #teammoth #migrantmoth 1160
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 17/06/2026A decent 148/62 in the garden last night. Scarcity was provided in the form of NFG Vitula biviella whilst Leopards stole the show from a visual point of view #teammoth 0280
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 16/06/2026Things are certainly hotting up weather wise, although the wind slightly hampered the garden catch last night. Some stunning moths in the trap nonetheless, with several Lozotaeniodes formosana bringing a welcome flash of orange to the egg boxes #TeamMoth 1240
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 14/06/2026Another day searching the calcareous grasslands, with today's main target being the Liquorice Piercer. Despite a thorough search of the foodplant, it remained elusive. Thankfully, Four-spotted, Aethes hartmanniana and Nemophora fasciella made for an enjoyable day in the field #teammoth 0150
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 13/06/2026A superb day on the Kent Downs, highlighted by several stunning Hypercallia citrinalis. Other chalk specialists were also well represented, with Lace Border, Oncocera semirubella, and Paratalanta hyalinalis all making appearances #teammoth 0230
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 31/05/2026Another night of exceptional migrant activity and the small garden actinic produces once again with this pristine Striped Hawk-moth alongside more Clancy’s Rustics and Small Mottled Willows. Still hoping for an EBS, maybe tonight🤞🏼 - Winchmore Hill, London #teammoth 0331
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 26/05/2026Since I moved house at the end of last year the traps have stayed hidden away in the shed. With the warm weather I finally dusted them off, and to a good result - Small Marbled and Phtheochroa schreibersiana within the first 50 species for the garden. 3454
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 08/03/2026A little bit of a break from birding with a manic period of work but nice to get back out on patch this weekend. No spring migrants as of yet but glad to catch up with the long staying Slavonian Grebe. 0150
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 02/12/2025After a two week stay bobbing around the edges of KGV Res it seems my local Grey Phalarope has now departed. Such a brilliant bird to have on your doorstep! #rarebirdsUK 0331
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 26/10/2025Down in Brighton for a friend’s birthday worked out well when this 1st-W Isabelline Shrike was found 10 minutes away. What an autumn it has been for Shrikes! #rarebirdsUK #Sussexbirding 0371

Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 05/10/2025Carrying on my streak of Shrikes in East Anglia, today I dropped in on the Red-tailed Shrike at Dunwich Heath. Showed fantastically in the morning sun, well worth the trip. 0202
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 03/10/2025Nice to see a good bird locally with this Pec Sand at Stanborough GPs. When I arrived it was flying around all over the place flushed by a kestrel, but as dusk rolled in it dropped down on a small pool next to the main track allowing for lovely views. 0121
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 02/10/2025A double shrike weekend with this Red-backed Shrike showing well at Moreston in the evening sun. 0130
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 01/10/2025Lesser Grey Shrike during a wander looking for migrants from Winterton to Waxham and back this weekend gone. It consumed a vast array of prey items with wriggling Devil's coach horse beetles being the most numerous. #rarebirdsUK 1301
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 08/09/2025What a weekend in East Anglia. Black-winged Kite, Cisticola, Barred Warbler, RB Shrike, Pec Sand, LT Skua, large and sooty shears, classic autumn migrants, bats hurling themselves into the sea watching shelter, and some brilliant food, drinks, and company. #RareBirdsUK 3441
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 19/07/2025The traps were absolutely heaving as the heavens opened this morning. A difficult unloading but thankfully the star moths were easy to spot with Bedstraw Hawk and Dark Crimson Underwing the highlights #norfolkmoths #teammoth 1924
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 04/07/2025Had my second garden record of Light Crimson Underwing last night. Took some photos on my phone in the trap and thought I’d better take the trap indoors to pot it. Moment I get inside it flies out the trap entrance, straight across the room and out the open door never to be seen again! #teammoth 3300
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 03/07/2025Nice to see such impressive numbers of Foresters in Norfolk last weekend. Covered every flowering plant in sight. #teammoth 3562
Henry Wyn-Jones @henrywynjones.bsky.social · 28/06/2025A scorcher of a day meant butterflies were in abundance with some absolutely crackers on the wing including Purple Emperor, Swallowtail, Silver Washed Fritillary (valesina form), and White Admiral. A Lesser Emperor topped off the day with @jonathanfarooqi.bsky.social. 2190
