Birder, moth-er, SW Hants, VC11. Generally fed up with stuff, but granddaughters and moths help break the tedium.

50 of 23 in SW Hants last night inc a big milestone moth: Endothenia quadrimaculana (new 10km square) was my 1000th UK species! Also a late Brussels Lace & NFY Barred Sallow. A few @migrantmothuk.bsky.social still: 5 Vestal, 3 R-d Pearl, 1 each L-album, Beet, Jersey Mocha & White Point #teammoth

Wasn't going to do a 4th consecutive night, but drizzly conditions were too tempting and the result was 214 of 55 (inc 68 LYU, a garden record). Obvious highlight was a NFM Anomalous (averages about 1 a year in Hants). UK list moves to 999! Also 2nd garden Tawny Pinion was nice #teammoth

Much improved 134 of 53 in SW Hants last night inc my first Gold Spot in nearly 20 years. 2nd & 3rd garden Clancy's Rustics headed a long list of @migrantmothuk.bsky.social Also 8 Vestal, 1 Dark Sw-grass, 1 Pearly U, 4 Palpita, 3 L-album, etc #teammoth

81 of 36 in SW Hants last night, inc a surprise NFM Mecyna asinalis. Only 10 previous county records (to 2024), most on the coast and none in my 10km square. Also a new garden record of 13 Vestals, the most numerous species of the night. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #teammoth

Only 47 of 27 in SW Hants last night but did include, at last, my first garden Convolvulus Hawk, 22nd garden addition of the year. Not that many other @migrantmothuk.bsky.social though: 3 Rush V, 2 R-d Pearl, 1 each Silver Y, Palpita vitrealis, Portland Ribbon Wave & Pearly Underwing. #teammoth

Poor shot of a NFM Golden Twin-spot disturbed in a New Milton, SW Hants, garden this morning. Good for @migrantmothuk.bsky.social at home overnight too, inc a record 12 Vestals (previous best 4!) and the 3rd garden Dewick's Plusia. 4 Hummer Hawks on the buddleia was a record too. #teammoth

Having only added Bedellia somnulentella to my life list, and that of my home 10km square, last weekend (and only with help on here), have today found several mines of what I presume are this species along the path round to our garage. #teammoth

First trap in over a week, rewarded with 203 of 92. Barred Hook-tip was the 20th NFG, and this Batrachedra will be 21st when I find out what species it is (see ALT)! Nice to get my first garden Light Crimson Underwing for a couple of years #teammoth
Batrachedra sp.
Either pinicolella or confusella, separable only by gendet.
Only pinicolella has been confirmed in Hants to date, but given that confusella is the pine specialist of the two and I have a lot of pines around me, suspect it's going to need checking out

Accidentally deleted the earlier post🙄 Blastobasis glandulella (Hants 1st, UK 3rd) from May here in SW Hants. Confirmed this weekend by gendet, thanks to Peter Hall, via @wheatersdave.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #teammoth

With the garden list poised on 799 it only took one more trapping night to bring up the 800, thanks to this slightly battered Bulrush Wainscot. Going to be a long wait for 900 though! Overall 100 of 56 was about par on a cool night here in SW Hants. #teammoth

287 of 94 in SW Hants last night included this apparent Bactra robustana (awaiting CMR clearance though), the 16th NFG of the year, with the garden list now tantalisingly poised at 799 . . . #teammoth

A bit of a breeze kept the numbers down, but an increase in variety making 364 of 112 in SW Hants. Highlight was this NFM apparent Balsam Carpet. No recent records locally and it would appear to be a spring generation individual, which seems odd. Thoughts/overrules welcome! #teammoth

603 of 108 in SW Hants last night, numbers boosted by big counts of Ermines, culmella & Stigmella (61+ of at least 2 spp; I rarely get more than half a dozen). The day after finally ticking Dewick's Plusia I get a 2nd, brighter one. Also 2nd garden record of Small Purple-barred was nice. #teammoth

352 of 93 in SW Hants last night included two very overdue NFM: Dewick's Plusia (worn, but I'll take it) & Crocidosema plebejana. 2nd garden record of Brown-veined Wainscot also nice, especially with a Webb's Wainscot for comparison. #teammoth

Twin-spot Plume last night takes the overall year list to 400, just a couple of days later than last year. Second garden record of a scarce Hants species. Tenanted Stigmella floslactella mines yesterday was new-for-me species number 13 of the year (have only had them vacated before) #teammoth

A lurking Fig-leaf Skeletoniser in a customer's garden just now, my 12th new species of the year. Last night 272 of 72 was more than expected, albeit skewed by 127 Chrysoteuchia culmella, comfortably a garden record for that species. Virtually no noctuids, with just 12 of 6 for them. #teammoth

369 of 103 last night, but the only usable photo I got was of the crane fly Ctenophora ornata. 48 Diamond-back Moths (8 R-d Pearl & 1 Silver Y the only other @migrantmothuk.bsky.social) & 42 Riband Waves topped the counts. Past three nights have advanced the garden year list by 59 to 314. #teammoth

Pammene aurana from a visit to Martin Down this morning, a new moth for me, my 980th in Hants. Six additions in all today took the Hants year list past 300 (now 305) and the "without a trap" year list into 3 figures (105). Rarest of all was my 1st Small Tortoiseshell in about 3 years #teammoth

Apologies for the recent radio silence from SW Hants. Thought it would be nice to return with a pic (from this morning) I presume has never been taken in Hants before: 2 Eastern Bordered Straws and a Bordered Straw together! Been a good moth week with lots of @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #teammoth

Last night felt suitable, but on recent evidence I was cautious, however spring finally came to SW Hants, with a greatly improved count of 76 of 38. Included a whopping 17 NFY, four here: Poplar Hawkmoth, Pine Hawkmoth, Coxcomb Prominent (1 of 2) & Peach Blossom. #teammoth 1/3

After an OK seawatch on the SW Hants coast, kicked through the grass, plantains & thrift on the clifftop and was rewarded with the day's 2nd NFM: Epiblema sticticana (See ALT) Dichrorampha acuminitana (7), Elachista argentella (9), Pyrausta despicata and (no pic) Homoeosoma sinuella NFY #teammoth
Epiblema sticticana.
A new 10km square for this species, but not unexpected: Colt's Foot is fairly common along the cliffs here, although rapidly decreasing as more collapses into the sea.

Only 16 of 14 in SW Hants, but worth it for NFM Spuleria flavicaput! Less than annual in Hants, and this is a new 10km square, but no doubt not a coincidence that two years ago next door planted a Midland Hawthorn barely 8m from where the trap sits. #teammoth

Been in a bit of a moth grump of late, with few opportunities and poor returns. Nice therefore to pot a NFM Micropterix tunbergella at work this afternoon, 4th newbie of the year. Then a little later Cream Wave took the overall year list to 100, milestone hit on the same date as last year #teammoth

After a warm Saturday, and with a brand new bulb, had hoped for more than the final tally of 18/13 last night. Only Brindled Beauty (4) & Waved Umber (3) weren't singles. Did include 5 NFY however, with Iron Prominent, Muslin Moth, Angle Shades & Red-green Carpet shown #teammoth 1/2

A couple of hours out pre-work added three to the year list (now on 86). Pebble Hook-tip & Eriocrania sangii were nice and photogenic, Adela reaumurella much less so. The inevitable Coleophora serratella cases also seen. #teammoth

Big uptick in moths in SW Hants last night, possibly helped as much by an enforced bulb change as better conditions. 55 of 27 inc 8 NFY: Portland Ribbon Wave (earliest in Hants by 4 weeks?) 3 Small Mottled Willow Chocolate-tip Small White Wave @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #teammoth 1/2

A breezy night in SW Hants, but thought I'd trap anyway as it was mild. Hadn't bargained for often heavy rain the two hours around dawn, making processing the meagre 13 of 9 a very unpleasant business. Yellow-barred Brindle NFY. #teammoth

A brief window of opportunity allowed me to get the annual Emperor fix. Never sat still, but this is by far the best pic I've ever got of one. May get a whole one in focus one day! Also my first (seven) Coleophora serratella cases of the year. #teammoth

40 of 16 in SW Hants last night, despite a strong breeze early on. Pine Beauty the only NFY. 12 Hebrew Characters, a record count for the garden. Twenty-plume and Silver Y disturbed at work this morning NFY for the overall list. Tonight looks very promising 🤞 #teammoth

Variety over quantity in SW Hants last night, with 21 of 17. Two NFY: a bang-on-schedule Nut-tree Tussock & a rather -ahead-of-itself Rusty-dot Pearl. Waved Umber one of the four sp with two trapped. Year list hit the 50 milestone 3 & 6 days ahead of 2024 & 25. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #teammoth

Just 8 of 8 in a moony SW Hants last night, but remarkably included two species new for me! Lyonetia prunifoliella very unexpected, 2nd Hants spring record and a new 10km square. Agonopterix alstromeriana less so, but few records locally. Only time for pot shots unfortunately. #teammoth

Good to know my MOL lure is equally as ineffective in decent habitat as it is at home. Two hours in the most rural garden I work in, under an oak tree in an area with plenty of other oaks nearby, has yielded not a sniff of a giganteana! #teammoth

Should've trusted the forecast last night: way too windy in SW Hants As a result just 3 moths (singles of Hebrew Ch, Small Q & Clouded D), plus sheet and clothes peg chaos. Lots of bycatch however, inc the first hoverfly (Syrphus sp per ObsID) & Stenophylax permistus caddisfly of the year. #teammoth

Couldn't get the trap out until after 9, but don't get much turning up early at this time of year, so doubt it would've made much of a difference to a final tally of 5 of 2 on a cool, breezy night #teammoth
