It is objectively terrifying that an Editor-in-Chief of Science, the academic journal of American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Medicine/Chemistry Professor is not only using ChatGPT as a search engine, but also openly stating it as if it’s a rational normal thing to do.

Physical books. You own them. They don't require updates. They don't surveil you or collect and sell your data. They are a genuinely safe hallucinogen that leaves you smarter and more empathetic and with a longer attention span the more you use them. Free from the library. What's not to like?

Be sure to use Al when making your next, I don't know, meal plan, for example. Definitely do not call your friend who loves to cook and ask her for her favorite recipes or tips or ways to save time making meals, because you will end
up talking for longer than you had hoped, hearing, perhaps, about her father's cancer diagnosis or how lonely she's been or even what she's planted in her spring garden and then lost with the early frost.

“Sir, are you aware that you are a cat, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani is standing right behind you?”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani behind the counter of a bodega in The Bronx, flanked by various people. A journalist with a microphone labeled “Shop Cats” is standing in front of the sales counter, and holding the mic up to a black and white cat sitting on the counter next to bananas. The cat has an expression like in the famous “Sir, are you aware that you are a cat” meme

The Artemis II mission seems good because it is. People seem excited by it because they are. It looks like a testament to the value of teamwork because it needs many people working together to succeed, and it’s succeeding. One of the best things about this is how straightforward it is. Authentic.

More context on this #Artemis II image: * This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right * The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon: ☀️🌍🚀🌕
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

I feel this way sitting on planet earth. The thing is: borders are stupid and nobody wants to accept it but it is. We should prioritize safeguarding our planet (ecosystem, flora, fauna, animals) and the people (no matter who they are) but we prioritize year on year profit growth (a made up thing).

You'll have seen this – Earth from #Artemis II en-route to the Moon. But look again – it's Earth's *nightside*, lit by the near-full Moon, not the Sun 🌕️ The aurorae, airglow, stars, & city lights in Europe, Africa, & the Americas give the game away. Cool. NASA/Reid Wiseman #Space #Photography
A picture of the Earth from space illuminated by the full Moon – it looks like daylight, but this is the night side of the planet, not the day side. There are city lights on the continents and a green aurora towards the north and south poles, plus a faint rim of upper atmosphere airglow as well. You can also see a faint dark rim of the Artemis II window frame and the zodiacal light (probably). North is at lower-left and you can see North Africa, then Spain and Portugal on that side. You can see South America and North America on the right side.

It's time politicians in NZ stop using X #nzpol
X integrates AI tool Grok, which has been used by men to generate sexualised images of women without consent as well as sexualised images of children. Despite this, Elon Musk refuses to add guardrails to prevent malicious use. This is not a difficult thing for him to do. He paywalled the function so anyone can pay to engage in sexual based image abuse. That's not good enough.

Our politicial figures in Aotearoa NZ should not be supporting X. To do so would be to implicitly support gender based violence against women and girls.
