I remember when a CEO got $1 million it was a big deal. From the early 1980’s to today CEO pay in the US rose by over 1300 % while workers pay grew by 18%. In the past, a CEO was a life long worker of the company who made it to the top. Now it’s like a cult of personality thing. It just greed.

There are two reasons. 1. C-suiters must be compensated what they think they're worth or, to quote a c-suiter, "they won't feel comfortable bringing their full selves to work." 2. They often must be paid contractually as much as other top CEOs, which naturally pushes up pay.

I know a highly compensated health care insurance exec. He travels the country, plays golf, attends social events & receives awards. I also know people working for health care insurance putting in 12-15 hr days & being treated like garbage for profit. There is no valid reason.

I’ve been in small groups with several CEOs. They seem to think that running the room demonstrates their value, but it usually comes off as a person in love with their own voice. Plus, it’s either an abstract, idea seeding handoff or an obligatory shoulder rubbing with the crew.

Their argument that I've seen is to retain "top talent" and because they are at the top, there is no cieling to the wages or bonuses, so it's inevitable that it just keeps going up. Selfish greed and thinking they do more than they actually do.

One element of exorbitant CEO pay is that generally speaking when a CEO is hired, they will insist that they be paid more than the preceding CEO. (How many CEO’s would take a cut in pay from the previous hire?) Imagine if teachers and nurses insisted on the same.
