While we are transfixed by the antics of our supposed "leaders", a catastrophe of astonishing proportions has been creeping up on us. Climate scientists now believe it is more likely than not to happen, and soon. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

A catastrophic climate event is upon us. Here is why you’ve heard so little about it | George Monbiot

Scientists say a crucial Atlantic system is set to collapse. But the billionaire death cult that steers humanity’s destiny just doesn’t do existential crises, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Please could a filmmaker make a gripping TV drama series about what the mass failure of harvests in the foreseeable future will mean for ordinary people’s lives. The “Don’t Look Up” metaphor didn’t land with many, they need to see it! Do it before a Reform govt bans you!! Please

Here in the outer Hebrides a weakening AMOC is already felt in cooler damper summers. I’m not dismissing the risk in questioning these models. The AMOC & Gulf Stream aka north Atlantic gyre are not the same. The Gulf Stream will not stop. In AMOC shutdown of Younger Dryas trees still grew here.

Creeping up on us in the sense that many of us have been screaming now for at least a decade about it looming while the world and its leaders carry on ignoring us. Situation normal. All the years we spent asking "what will it take to make them listen?" We know now. Nothing will work.

This is a very selfish thing for me to say, but I am very grateful that I never had children & therefore no grandchildren to worry about. Any wonder people are having less children than before - of course $ is a factor but so is optimism (or, as seems more likely now, pessimism) about the future

George, excellent article but pardon my ignorance - is this the same system known as the 'Greenland Pump' which we were warned about many years ago? If it slows or stops the change to the climate of the British Isles would indeed be catastrophic.

anlomedad @anlomedad.bsky.social · 23/04/2026

good roar! That decades-long downplaying by mainstream economists also cut decision makers' curiosity in climate impact knowledge. Why get curious about it when the consensus at parties is that it'll be a mere glitch? bsky.app/profile/anlo... This Obama scene below is a lucky catch as illustration

anlomedad@anlomedad.bsky.social

What decision-makers think they know of climate change impacts versus what the IPCC has published about it. Climate refugees at 2C and at 3C IPCC SR15 in 2018: 500mio and 1.2 billion Obama in 2023 : only a few and 100 million That's a lot of people…

I think there's a different mindset at play. They're smart enough to understand that catastrophic change is looming, but they believe that there is still money to be made and that they are smart enough to know when to pull out. Ideally, they want to be the last to pull out and still make a profit.

All billionaires shouldn't exist but I find it galling that their wealth and influence comes from such appallingly bad business models. Gates' 'Windows' OS was absolutely dire when released and Bezos business was basically an online bookshop. Zuckerberg's farcebook is just an online chatbox etc etc.
