Five corporations control 90% of the US media market. Airlines merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today. Four giants control 80% of meat processing. The evidence of corporate consolidation is everywhere. It means more power for them and less freedom for you.

And because of how the IPO is organized, Musk and SpaceX insiders can sell their shares sooner than usual. They’ll ride the stocks’ upward tide as major indices force millions to buy it, and then cash out before the crash. Sound like a Ponzi scheme to you? It does to me, too.

Normally, stock indices have a waiting period before they plow their investors’ money into a newly public company. But SpaceX lobbied index funds, like the Nasdaq 100, to allow for faster entry. That means your retirement savings could soon be tied to SpaceX’s rapidly-inflating market value.

In fact, much of the valuation stems from a deal Musk negotiated between SpaceX and xAI. Two companies that Musk controls... He essentially made and closed that deal with himself, unilaterally deciding the value of his own transaction. A magic trick, out of thin air!

Granted, it’s difficult to predict the value of activities that don’t yet exist, such as SpaceX’s stated mission to “extend the light of consciousness to the stars.” But before this giant IPO, capitalism had never before put a price tag on something nearly as speculative and as large.

Musk has set SpaceX’s price at $135/share, valuing the company at $1.77 TRILLION. That’s nearly 100 times SpaceX’s $18.7B in revenue last year (not counting its $4.2B operating LOSS). A wild overvaluation given SpaceX’s consistent negative profitability and failure to meet goals.

Look at this figure showing the global distribution of ocean temperature profile observations and contributions from major countries from 2005 to 2023. Without the US, we're flying blind.
Seven world maps (a–g) displaying global ocean temperature profile observations from 2005–2023, colour-coded by platform type: profiling floats (PFL, grey), animal-borne platforms (APB, light blue), expendable bathythermographs (XBT, red lines), CTD casts (orange), drifting buoys (yellow), ocean station data (pink), gliders (dark blue), and moored buoys (black).

**Panel a (all countries)** shows the densest coverage overall, with XBT transect lines crossing all major basins and profiling floats (grey) extensively blanketing the Southern Ocean, South Atlantic, and open Pacific.

**Panel b (USA, 1st)** dominates with bold trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic XBT lines and extensive float coverage across the Pacific — most closely resembling the all-country map.

**Panel c (Australia, 2nd)** shows XBT lines radiating into the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean, with float data concentrated south of 40°S.

**Panel d (Japan, 3rd)** features an exceptionally dense CTD cluster in the North Pacific and trans-Pacific XBT routes, with minimal Atlantic presence.

**Panel e (France, 4th)** shows dispersed coverage across the tropical Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Pacific, reflecting overseas territories and research voyages.

**Panel f (Germany, 5th)** displays a small number of prominent long XBT transects across the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, suggesting systematic repeat-section cruises rather than broad coverage.

**Panel g (all others combined)** shows substantial XBT and CTD activity across all basins but noticeably less profiling float coverage (grey) than panel a, indicating that the top five countries — particularly the USA — drive the majority of float-based observations globally.
