Would someone here tell me how this statement from me legitimises racism ? I’ve left out the name of the man who made the initial comment. I have no problem with him or what he said. But someone here has been trying for two days now to get me to confess to the racist content of my reply ~

Late morning in Kyiv after the overnight attack. Soon, I’m going to my workout. As usual on Wednesdays. Perhaps you’ve read about the casualties and damage. Not only in Kyiv. I hope you have. I don’t open the windows. The city is covered in smoke.

Something unusual is happening in Kyiv. Calm. Since last night. It’s 4 pm. This calm feels like a spider’s web. Delicate. Fragile. May the spider keep doing its job.

There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

Turned out to be fake. The bigger fact remains current developments in chip design, cooling systems & software will make such behemoth data centres obsolete before they’re built. There’s no invention created by human intelligence that can’t be shittified by human stupidity. AI is watching us.

There are apparently fig trees(!) in Sheffield & here's the Sheffield Tribune's explanation of how they got there: There really is no place called "Away"... everything comes from somewhere and everything goes somewhere.
"They owe their existence to Sheffielders of the past’s fondness for fig biscuits, with the seeds that passed through their digestive system finding their way to Meadowhall. There, germinated by the regular hot discharges from the area’s steel mills, they grew into the forest of urban figs you see today."

Fishing some 5,300 years ago: a Neolithic fishhook made of a wild boar tusk, wrapped with a fishing line. The size of the fishhook is 6.5 cm. It was used to catch pikes. Found in the lake-dwelling settlement of Arbon Bleiche 3, Switzerland. On display at Archäologisches Museum Frauenfeld 📷me 🏺
The picture shows a fishhook made of wild boar tusk. Only the curved, pointed end and the upper part are visible. The rest is wrapped in fishing line. The fishing line is made of twisted bast.

The moment uplands are freed from grazing they begin to hold more water. The increasing mass of vegetation can dry out and burn. Drones can spot fires when they start & call more drones to put them out. As uplands become wooded they protect lowlands from flood & drought. And less likely to burn.

I cannot see a dead fish as a "conservation success". Bluefin tuna are still rare - they only avoid being technically endangered cos they stabilised at a tiny number. That's not a healthy population, just a stable one. Let them breed and really do well before you fish for them if you have to.

Timeless humour! A 2,000 year-old Roman souvenir pen with a joke inscription roughly equivalent to: “I went to Rome and all I got you was this cheap pen!" 😂 Dated circa 70 AD, this iron stylus pen was recovered in London during excavations by MOLA. 📷 Juan Jose Fuldain/MOLA #Archaeology
The photo by Juan Jose Fuldain for MOLA shows four images of the same Roman iron stylus (pen) one below the other, with knib to the left. The stylus is octagonal in shape, with a dot-punched inscription along its length on four alternate sides. The stylus is 132 mm long and 5 mm thick, and the letters are circa 2 mm high. The four images of the pen show the four lines of inscribed text (highlighted) which read:

'ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf (e)ro acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m)
rogo si fortuna darlelt quo possem
largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus'

Translated as

I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me.
I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.'

This inscription is generally interpreted by scholars as a humorous, tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment by the giver of the cheapness of the gift.
