I read a couple hundred death penalty cases for a case once and I think you’d all be shocked at how often this happens. The death penalty is one of the cruelest things in our system, an obvious violation of the 8th amendment cruel and unusual punishment clause, but we just love to kill.

This is preposterous as it is monstrous Pike survived the execution procedure and now her lawyers, unable to reach the governor or state AG office, are rushing an emergency motion to the Tennessee Supreme Court in their *car* seeking an order to get her medical care

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Of the planes in ICE’s charter fleet that regularly do third-country removals, it looks like two, possibly three, are in position and could conceivably leave as early as tonight.

I don't know what's in her heart. She does not align with my goals.

just fantastic little observations everywhere
them. A benefits analyst described the sensation:

You can't justify anything now; you can't be sure of it or prove it because you have nothing down in writing. Without writing, you can't remember things, you can't keep track of things, there's no reasoning without writing. What we have now—you don't know where it comes from. It just comes at you.

A digital recreation of a panel from the 1960s Hungarian comic strip Jucika by Pál Pusztai. In the image (drawn with black outlines and limited color that is also charmingly, wildly out of register) we see the main character, Jucika, a brunette woman with a short, kicky haircut wearing a striped, green, knee-length, sleeveless dress. She is dancing with a delighted-looking man in a military uniform who is holding one of her hands while in the other she's carrying a red portable radio by its little handle. She's grinning back over her shoulder to the left to see an attractive woman – red hair in curly bangs and a pony tail and wearing a different sort of green dress – who is dancing to the music from the radio with a different delighted-looking man in a brown suit. Everyone is having a great time. Below the drawing is all lower case script lettering with a brown drop that reads 'talán ma fog megtörténni', which my Hungarian-speaking friend Matilda assures me translates to 'Maybe it will happend today'

like it's just kind of a normative condition, a mutual understanding among everyone involved that nothing will ever happen to change the circumstances that permitted someone to hurt you
160
zoë @zo-e.xyz · 28/09/2026
everyone always says like "that should have never happened to you and i'm so sorry", potentially even the person who assaulted you (!) and you might move on from it personally but there really is a chilling effect since you know there will never be any consequences for anyone

zoë @zo-e.xyz · 28/09/2026
i was sexually assaulted in college multiple times and didn't even really perceive it as sexual assault because of how totally normalized it is, especially if you know the person who does it, and how even things that are really, obviously violent assaults are treated by everyone as misunderstandings

I work with teens and they are very conscious of consent and bullshit. I think in our 20s a lot of us realize that non-consent and acceptance of bullshit is largely considered "required" to get by in the world and forget when we didn't believe this

what's a good use of a data center ? hosting actual public information ? like a fucking library ? Encyclopedia ? Access to art and music and cultural resources ? Hosting collaborative functionality, email, platforms for communication ?
130
zoë @zo-e.xyz · 27/09/2026
when I say the public good I do mean the public. I mean normal fucking people who want to eat and take care of their families and, potentially, have a future on a habitable planet earth

zoë @zo-e.xyz · 27/09/2026
hyperscale data centers use a lot of water and I think it is absolutely imperative that, as with ANYTHING that uses a lot of resources, those facilities be used intentionally in ways that benefit the public good and not, idk, tech companies' investor calls ?

zoë @zo-e.xyz · 27/09/2026
human discernment and oversight needs to be part of any automation for it to function and to not do harm and LLM chatbots explicitly intend to remove human discernment and oversight from the process of information gathering and decision making

unfortunately, synthetic output aesthetically resembling human language or reasoning is not that and does not seem to have a useful application EXCEPT if your use case is obfuscating functionality and, indeed, the very nature of human language and reasoning
