"on the loose and unable to be recalled" this is not true ! this is simply untrue
Before I offer — with the help of my friend and technology tutor Craig Mundie, a former head of research and strategy at Microsoft — some policy recommendations for how to cool this mess with the least damage possible, let me foreshadow the bottom line: It’s too late to think that better control of future A.I. models by the U.S. and China will fix the challenges we face today from the dangerous models already out there, on the loose and unable to be recalled. What we need to agree on immediately is how we work together to defend against these threats that are already here and can cause enormous damage and societal instability in America and China.

i categorically disagree with the idea that it should be this hard to get to Settings in an application. i have to tell people multiple times a day how to find things like this. Settings gear used to appear in Teams and Outlook next to your user picture and they keep burying it deeper and deeper
the outlook web settings menu showing that you have to click a three dots icon to find Settings, which is for some reason nested beneath "Teams Chat", "My Day", and "Sync", the third of which is mysterious to me. I guess that's just send/receive nowthe Microsoft teams "three dots" icon which situates "Settings" underneath Teams Premium Benefits (or, GET TEAMS PREMIUM if you don't have Teams Premium), "Pin Window on top", THEN "Settings", then "Cast", then "Downloads", then Zoom, then Help, feedback, keyboard shortcuts, and "Get the mobile app"

my grandmother wrote a couple postcards to her parents during a road trip with her husband in July 1947. They apparently drove around Lake Erie in Ohio and PA and then went to Niagara Falls. she came from a big family and they weren't used to being alone together apparently.
Straights Service Cabins, Erie PA. my grandmother has indicated a cabin in the background of this super blown out old photo saying "we slept here"card postmarked July 1947 handwritten. "Hi Folks. We stayed here Mon. Nite. It's real cold. Just like a Fall day. We viewed the Lake (Erie) all day (Mon.). It's too beautiful for words. We are both lonesome. Ed said we should have taken someone else with us. It's Tues. at 9:00 and we heading for Niagara Falls." At the top she has written "keep this card for us."

more good weizenbaum on this topic:
And it is possible, using such programming techniques, to build a knowledge base into a computer. Such a programming system thus demonstrates that it is possible to escape from the rigidity of form commonly associated with programming. But we mustn't make too much of this. A lazy student's list of useful physics formulas may enable him to solve many schoolbook problems in physics, but will still not give him an understanding of physics, a theory he can think about. Just so, a set of assertions of the kind we have shown may enable a computer to solve certain problems. But this says nothing of a programmer's or of a computer's mastery of a theory or of either's understanding of anything more than how to use a group of "facts" to arrive at certain conclusions. A computer's successful performance is often taken as evidence that it or its programmer understand a theory of its performance. Such an inference is unnecessary and, more often than not, is quite mistaken. The relationship between understanding and writing thus remains as problematical for computer programming as it has always been for writing in any other form.

sorry to keep banging this gong again but
Joseph Weizenbaum in Computer Power and Human Reason:
The computer has thus begun to be an instrument for the destruction of history. For when society legitimates only those "data" that are "in one standard format" and that "can easily be told to the machine," then history, memory itself, is annihilated. The New York Times has already begun to build a "data bank" of current events. Of course, only those data that are easily derivable as by-products of typesetting machines are admissable to the system. As the number of subscribers to this system grows, and as they learn more and more to rely on "all the news that [was once] fit to print," as the Times proudly identifies its editorial policy, how long will it be before what counts as fact is determined by the system, before all other knowledge, all memory, is simply declared illegitimate? Soon a supersystem will be built, based on the New York Times data bank (or one very like it), from which "historians" will make inferences about what "really" happened, about who is connected to whom, and about the "real" logic of events. There are many people now who see nothing wrong in this.

I follow Australian news for some reason and I am now learning about the "melon gaffe." the government is accused of leaking correspondence about the melon gaffe
Coalition demands AFP look at leaked melon gaffe correspondence
By Stephen Dziedzic
The federal opposition has written to federal police urging them to investigate an apparent leak of correspondence over the prime minister's melon gaffe between
Japan and Australia.
At least two Australian media outlets reported on Monday evening that a Japanese official had written to Australian counterparts last month, saying Tokyo would not complain about the podcast exchange, and that media coverage of the incident was
"sensationalised."
It's not clear who provided the correspondence to those outlets, but the Coalition is suggesting the government may have orchestrated the leak in order to protect the prime minister.

you can tell how much he enjoys doing "actually it's about ethics at the university" and playing reporter about something that has already been reported out by others. again embarrassing that the NYT is paying him money for this completely hollow preening bs
Of course genuinely unfair right-wing attacks on academia exist. Donald Trump's campaign against D.E.I. goes beyond concerns about the rigor of certain diversity programs — concerns I share, in part — and well into rocket-launcher-versus-mosquito territory. Sometimes, though, academics use Mr. Trump and the populist forces he represents as a convenient excuse to avoid the quality control that was so obviously absent here.

a detail I hadn't heard about the DMB poop bus before is that an enraged passenger actually broke the case by walking around the area after the incident looking for the bus www.chicagotribune.com/2004/08/26/c...
Police were able to identify the bus shown in the health club's surveillance video by tracing a license plate number provided by a boat passenger, Chasen said. Soaked and angry, the passenger combed the area and found a luxury coach parked in front of the Peninsula Hotel, where the Dave Matthews Band was staying while playing two concerts at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wis.

trying to walk through in my head the process of assigning this column and approving this column and giving myself a migraine steve buckley is a 70-year-old gay sportswriter and this is the shit he comes up with for this topic? and you published it? shame.
At the risk of boring you with seventh-grade civics, but to use a kitschy sports term to make the point, this would be a good time to have a Turn Back the Clock event that teaches and celebrates the protections of the First Amendment. And if you happen to be a member of a championship team who’s been invited to the White House, go ahead and go. Or don’t go. Do that First Amendment thing and tell everyone else to screw off.
For sports people who want to take a stand on this or that issue and who are prepared to deal with the avalanche of positive and negative commentary that ensues, go right ahead. For athletes who choose to say nothing, allow them that right.
Why does everything have to be so complicated?

(i have highlighted the sentence: "For athletes who choose to say nothing, allow them that right.")

pbs news lmao what
Liz Landers:
On Friday, the president blamed the state of Minnesota and its Governor Tim Walz for the attacks, calling them grossly incompetent and corrupt. Is that a fair criticism?
Cynthia Kaiser:
The FBI itself has noted that at least seven states have been impacted. And even since Friday, Michigan has come out saying that they have also been victims or at least targeted as a part of this attack. So it really is broader than the state of Minnesota.
